Scholarship Summary for 2016

If my math is correct, OL=14 (11+3) OL, RB=9 (6+3), QB=5 (4+1), 21 WR (7+5)/TE (6+3)=49 offense; DL=14 DL (10+4), LB=10 (5+5) and DB=15 (11+4)=39 Defense. 49+39=88. This includes 28 committed players which includes 7 January enrollees. Brian Cole, Allen Gant, Derrick Green, Terrence Richardson, Tom Strobel (Ohio Univ.), and Ross Taylor-Douglas (Rutgers) are transferring. Other Transfer possibilities loom with Lawrence Marshall, Ty Isaac, Reon Dawson, Jaron Dukes, Freddy Canteen, Brandon Watson, etc. Some Michigan players may leave for the NFL, go on medical or choose to transfer under the 5th year rule including Blake Bars, DeMario Jones, Shane Morris, etc. Some may not decide until after Spring Practice. Our decommitment list (12) included Messiah DeWeaver, Jordan Elliott, Kiante Enis, Matt Falcon, Devery Hamilton, Dele Harding, David Reese, Antwaine Richardson, Sir Patrick Scott, Erik Swenson, Victor Viramontes, and Rashad Weaver. It certainly breaks the previous record set by Coach Rodriquez in 2009 with 9. 

There is a chance that some players won't return based on discussions between the players and coaches because eligibility for a redshirt year is a negotiation. Kickers, snappers and others may have other scholarship funding based on their preferred walk-on status when they came in. This may mean that Scott Sypniewski, Kenny Allen and others who began their Michigan Football careers as walk-ons may have other scholarship funding. Some players may go on medical due to injury issues that may prevent their playing time. (i.e. Michael McCray). Next, some players like Andrew David may be on scholarship funding in another sport (i.e. baseball). Finally, some players may not have much of a chance for playing time. (i.e. Blake Bars, Reon Dawson, Jaron Dukes, DeMario Jones, etc.) It is also possible that a graduate student may not count against the 85 total allowed. Teams may oversign by 3 because some players may leave, quit, transfer or become academically ineligible from February to September; if they aren't able to enroll in September, then they may enroll the following January.
