Comments: We were the worst offensive team in the Big 10, and one of the worst nationally. We ranked 97th in scoring offense, 60th in rushing offense, 108th in passing offense and 111th in total offense. Our passing game is practically non-existent! In the Big Ten, we rank last in scoring, passing and total offense, and 7th in rushing offense. We rank last in the Big Ten in time of possession, passing efficiency, 3rd down conversions and first downs. We led NCAA Division I football in three and outs and fumbles. Our coaches did not have this offense prepared, and our opponents didn't take us seriously; we were too easy to prepare for and adjust to. Threet is a capable quarterback, and our receivers are also capable; unfortunately, we aren't getting the job done. If one has capable players, does this mean coaching is contributing to the problem? I think so. Minor came in and really gave us hope for a solid running game with this offense. I wonder why he didn't start from the season opener? McGuffie has looked great at times, and our offensive line has improved; however, neither McGuffie nor our offensive line are capable of playing "mash-mouth" Big Ten football. 3rd down conversions and efficiency have improved, but red zone efficiency has cost us at least two wins. We ranked last in the Big Ten in 3rd down conversions and 10th in red zone efficiency. Obviously, we need to limit our turnovers, and points allowed off turnover; we are ranked 120th in fumbles and 103rd in turnover margin. Mental mistakes and/or missed assignments have a lot to do with preparation (coaching). There is enough talent on this team for the offense to be productive, but the coaching and preparation is poor and I don't think the players are performing to their capabilities (coaching again). Offensive Coordinator Calvin Magee has done a poor job developing this group, and in play calling. Many thought Coach DeBord was bad, Magee has been worse. The only saving grace to this offense is the steady improvement of the offensive line under Coach Frey.

Utah: Our offense and offensive coaching (Rodriquez and Magee) earned a failing grade: F in the first game.

Miami-OH: D for the second game; 16 points against a weak Miami team.

Notre Dame: B- against the Irish, but 6 special teams and offensive turnovers cost us the game.

Wisconsin: We earn an E for the first half, and a B+ for the second half with 3 touchdowns, and one for one in the red zone; overall, we get a C-.

Illinois: Give Michigan a C- for the Illinois game; we started well in the first quarter, but didn't score or move the ball in the 2nd or 3rd quarter when the Illini thwarted our offense 8 drives in a row.

Toledo: This is a no-brainer, obviously we failed with an E! First ever loss to a MAC team in Michigan football history!

Penn State: 3 red zones in the first quarter, and converting all three into 17 points was an excellent start. Penn State adjusted, we didn't. 202 net rushing yards was our best effort yet. Our defense and special teams were horrid!

Michigan State: The drive just before the half was great, and red zone efficiency was good; however, when we need to get a score, we simply can't get it done. No running game, no wins.

Purdue: Offense showed improvement with 3 red zone TDs, and some big plays. If someone had told me before the game that we'd score 42 points, I'd have guaranteed victory. Minor was particularly impressive. Offensive line is getting better. Threet kills the offense with overthrows, hurries, and a lack of poise.

Minnesota: Offense showed great improvement earning 6 red zones, a season high, and converting 5 into 23 points. We had 435 net offensive yards including 234 net yards rushing, our bests of the season, with 20 first downs and 10 of 20 in 3rd down conversions.

Northwestern: Offense was bad, very, very bad. 82 plays resulted in only 264 net offensive yards, 2 turnovers, 1 sack, 2 red zones with one converted, 8 of 26 on 3rd and 4th down conversions, and forced into 7 punts. Northwestern adjusted to us in the second half, and completely shut us down with zero points.

Ohio State: Offense was forced into the most punts in the season: 12, and had the least yards gained, least first downs, least points scored, worst 3rd and 4th down conversion percentage, etc. Offense has an early red zone with zero points, and a season high with 9 three and outs. Offense had the most three and outs and fumbles in the NCAA Division I in 2008. Offense was the worst in the Big Ten, and one of the worst in NCAA Division I football. Even Bump Elliott's worst teams in the 1960's were not this bad. Coach Rod and Coach Magee were miserable failures offensively in play calling, offensive schemes, developing and improving the offense, etc. Offense and offensive coaching both earn E's.

Utah	F	B-	Loss, Defense gave offense a chance to win the game, but offense wasn't up to the task.
Miami-Ohio	D	A	Win, Defense wins this one!
Notre Dame	B-	C-	Loss, Special Teams hands the Irish the game with two early turnovers, and Defense can't hold Irish in the Red Zone.
Wisconsin	C-	A-	Win, Defense stops Wisconsin cold in the second half, scores a defensive TD to put us ahead for good, and we stop a 2 point conversion to tie the game and force overtime on a penalty.
Illinois	C-	D-	Loss, Defense can't hold an 11 point lead that the offense creates in the first quarter. Defense gives us numerous big play TDs of 77 and 57 yards and allows a huge time of possession advantage for the loss.
Toledo	F	B-	Loss, offense can't score in the second half, capitalizes on 3 points in 3 red zones, gives Toledo a TD on a 100 yard interception in the red zone (14 point turnaround), and misses field goal to tie the game and force overtime.
Penn State	C+	E	Offense gives defense a 2 score lead, but Special Teams and Defense let Penn State make it a one score lead at half. Then, defense and special teams let Penn State produce a 32-0 second half onslaught!
Michigan State	D	D	21-21 tie after 3 quarters, and MSU owns the 4th quarter. Offense gives up 2 turnovers by Threet, and defense can't stop MSU when we needed a stop. 4 offensive turnovers negates a potential C+/B- grade.
Purdue	B	E	Defense gives up 6 red zones TDs for 42 points, then after offense ties the game with 1:20 to go allowed a 4 play TD drive. Defense gives up 522 net yards, 10 of 19 in 3rd and 4th down conversions with 25 first downs to a Purdue offense that came into the game as the #10 scoring offense, #11 rushing offense, #10 red zone offense, #9 in time of possession and #9 total offense in the Big Ten. This allows Purdue to dominate the time of possession by over 15 minutes and execute 22 more offensive plays.
Minnesota	A-	A	Solid game, playing for pride proves we are capable.
Northwestern	E	C+	Offense was bad, very, very bad. Defense forces two turnovers, but gives up 3 big plays for TDs, two on 3rd and 18 and 3rd and 17 following sacks and a 53 yard pass in the middle of the field where both our safeties were beat. Every team designs and executes plays exposing and defeating our poor safety play.
Ohio State	E	C-	9 three and outs, 197 yards of net offense, one of two in red zone for 7 points, 3 of 19 in 3rd down conversions; this is easily a failing grade offensively. Defense had a solid B except for the big plays of 59, 52 and 49 yards resulting in 3 TDs.

Comments: Sheridan rushed 42 times for a net of 92 yards, completed 63 of 137 for 613 yards, 2 TDs, 5 interceptions, 4 sacks, a safety, a fumbled snap that he recovered and a fumble on a handoff to Shaw that set Utah up in the red zone. Sheridan started 4 games, and Threet started 8. Threet was 102 of 200 for 1105 yards, 9 TDs, 14 sacks, 2 fumbles, 7 interceptions and 72 carries for 189 yards and 2 TDs after deducting the 157 yards in sacks. He hurried, underthrew, overthrew, made many poor decisions and didn't give us the leadership or poise we have become accustomed to from this position. Combined passing showed 165 for 338, 1718 yards, 11 TDs, 22 sacks, a safety and 12 interceptions; we are ranked 113th in NCAA Team Passing Efficiency with a paltry 95.13 rating. Our passing offense ranked 106th nationally, and #11 in the Big Ten. Our scoring and total offense ranked last in the Big Ten and 87th and 105th respectively nationally. Without a doubt, we got little from this position, but we did what we needed to do to get three wins. Feagin was recruited as a quarterback, but has moved to slot wide receiver, and contributed on special teams against Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern and Ohio State. Cone was the #4 quarterback, but didn't play at all. Commitments Shavodrick Beaver and Tate Forcier for 2009!!! Both will enroll January, 2009 and participate in Spring pracices, 2009 although Beaver had surgery on a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder so he probably won't play! Will we add Devin Gardner, Robert Bolden or others for 2010?

Comments: Our rushing offense ranked 60th nationally. Brandon Minor carried 103 carries for 533 yards, and 9 TDs plus 5 catches for 59 yards and another 2 TDs. He gave us hope with his solid, tough running; he is cut in the mold of a Michigan tailback, and it was great to see that we had one tough player on offense. McGuffie had 118 carries for 486 yards, 3 TDs plus 19 catches for 176 yards and another TD; however, he had a concussion in the MSU game and missed the Purdue game. He also had a death in his family to deal with so the year ended on a sour note after a great start. Shaw had 42 carries for 215 yards, 3 turnovers and 6 catches for 32 yards; he was not 100% with a groin pull, but looks like a great offensive player for the next three years. Carlos Brown had 29 carries for 122 yards and caught 6 passes for 23 yards; however, he nursed shoulder and foot injuries, and didn't play much of the season. Overall, we had 453 carries for a net of 1771 yards taking away 22 sacks and a couple "knees" with 17 rushing TDs. A telling tale in the Toledo game was zero rushing TDs. Avery Horn has played on kickoff returns, but not at running back. Kevin Grady was suspended for the first game, but carried 14 times for 33 yards and a TD carrying a Notre Dame defender into the end zone. All those squats have paid off. Moundros saw action at Power Back and on special teams gaining 11 yards in two carries, and scored his first TD against Illinois with a 2 yard grab. Helmuth saw action only on special teams, and has now moved to defensive line. Jim Potemba made all travel teams, but didn't see action at running back. Mike Cox redshirted, but may transfer.

Comments: DC Stonum started most games, but was out against Illinois for a violation of team rules; he caught 14 passes for 176 yards, and his first TD as a Wolverine against Purdue on a 51 yarder. Savoy started in his absence and had 4 catches for 38 yards; he also caught a 11 yarder for a TD against Purdue. Babb caught two passes against the Irish for 45 yards, and started against Toledo; however, he was dismissed from the team on November 16.

Comments: Odoms had 49 catches for 443 yards to lead our receiving attack. He is fast, and will continue to be a big offensive contributor; he had a shoulder injury that kept him out aginst Toledo. Clemons backed up Odoms, and started against Toledo; he had 11 catches for 101 yards, and 2 carries for 6 yards; he really messed up on two tipped passes, one was catchable that resulted in interceptions. Robinson redshirted due to knee injury. Roundtree also redshirted.

Comments: Mathews caught 35 for 409 yards, and 2 TDs; he had no catches against Ohio State, and has to learn to back up the constant running of his mouth. Hemingway started the second game when Mathews injured his ankle; he caught the TD toss of 33 yards plus an 8 yarder. Hemingway nursed a shoulder injury, and was out for the rest of the year with "Mono." Rogers had 3 catches for 64 yards, and has been utilized on kickoff returns; he gets his first start of the season and his career against MSU and also started the Purdue game. Elias Kos and Jared Van Slyke were walk-on candidates that made the Fall roster.

Comments: Koger started the most games, and had 6 catches for 93 yards and a TD. Massey started against Wisconsin and Ohio State, and has been named as game Captain 4 times this season including permanent captain, but had no catches. Butler embarassed himself again by being ejected at Notre Dame; he has caught 2 for 17 yards in 3 games. He also got his usual illegal procedure call jumping the snap count in the Utah game and set us up with 10 men on the field during one Miami game play. Comments on Defense:

Utah: Our defensive coaches (Shafer, Hopson, Tall and Gibson) did not prepare our team for the Utah offense; however, we did adjust well at halftime. Our defense responded in the second half, and gave the offense a chance to win it; unfortunately, our offense wasn't capable and/or up to the challenge. Our defensive backs looked very mediocre with only two pass break ups, one that resulted in an interception in the red zone. Our linebacking looked mediocre to below average especially on pass coverage; Ezeh was outstanding at MIKE though. Our defensive line did not pressure in the first half, but finished the game with 6 sacks, and a lot of hurries. We forced Utah into 7 punts, 3 turnovers and two blocked kicks. Utah converted three of five red zones for 16 points, 2 TDs (one rushing, one passing) and a field goal. Our defense earns a B- for the game (E in the first half, A+ in the second half).

Miami-OH: We get an A for the performance against Miami-OH.

Notre Dame: Give the defense a C- for their Notre Dame performance; we did stop one red zone with a turnover, but let the other three go for 21 points although we almost forced a turnover on another one. The 60 yard bomb was inexcusable. Defense didn't stop the Irish when necessary. After getting to 10-21, we give up a drive for a TD making the two score game into a three score game. Offense makes it a two score game by halftime, but gives up a second half TD so the 2nd quarter breakdown by the defense really cost us. Any time 35 points are scored with 28 on the defense, one cannot expect a grade much higher than a C-.

Wisconsin: Give the defense an A- for their performance against Wisconsin! They held one of the most powerful rushing offenses in the nation to oly 159 yards, 54 in the second half, one rushing TD, 13 points in 4 red zones and 13 points off 5 Michigan turnovers, 4 sacks, 4 turnovers.

Illinois: Give the defense a D- for their performance against the Illini! No sacks! They allowed 501 yards in net offense, 19 first downs, 4 of 5 in red zone efficiency for 28 points, 2 big play TDs of 77 and 57 yards, a six minute time of possession advantage (19 of 30 minutes in the second half) and were 6 of 15 on 3rd down conversions.

Toledo: Give the defense a B-! They played a fairly strong game especially with two starters out: Warren and Graham. No offensive points allowed in the first half; however, with the game on the line, they allowed Toledo to manuever into three second half field goal attempts; two were good including the game winner, and that was the difference in the game. They only achieved one sack, and 4 tackles for loss while allowing the Rockets to posses the ball 19 of 30 minutes in the 2nd half with the game on the line.

Penn State: Defense failed miserably, and earns an E. Defense can't hold a two score lead, and gives up 23 points on five red zones plus two big play TDs of 80 and 44 yards. Defense gives up 482 total offensive yards, 22 first downs, loses a 5 minute halftime time of possession advantage created by the offense, allows 50% 3rd down conversions with 7 of 14, and can only hold Penn State to 3 punts, no sacks and only forces one turnover.

Michigan State: Defense gave up two big play TDs, and two TDs in the 4th quarter when the score was tied. Defense did force 3 turnovers, and stopped 3 Spartan field goal attempts including one block; however, overall grade of D for giving up 473 yards in total offense with 10 of 19 in 3rd and 4th down conversions.

Purdue: Shafer moves defense to a 3-3-5 scheme, and fails miserabily. Defense gives up 6 red zones TDs for 42 points, then after offense ties the game with 1:20 to go allowed a 4 play TD drive. Defense gives up 522 net yards, 10 of 19 in 3rd and 4th down conversions with 25 first downs to a Purdue offense that came into the game as the #10 scoring offense, #11 rushing offense, #10 red zone offense, #9 in time of possession and #9 total offense in the Big Ten. This allows Purdue to dominate the time of possession by over 15 minutes and execute 22 more offensive plays.

Minnesota: Defense earns an A for an outstanding performance. 6 three and outs, 4 sacks, 7 punts, 3 fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, 83 net yards rushing and only 188 net offensive yards. Shafer moving back to a 4 man front really paid dividends.

Northwestern: Our defense played well enough for us to win this game except for 3 plays. Two were following sacks on 3rd and long. In the first quarter, we give up a 3rd and 17 draw play with two missed tackles by Stevie Brown and Charles Stewart for a TD, and in the 3rd quarter, we give up a 3rd and 18 TD pass where Donovan Warren was beat in the end zone with poor coverage. Also, in the 3rd quarter, our safeties allow a 53 yard down the middle pass play for a TD, and this ends up being the game winner because our pathetic offense couldn't respond. Defense forced 9 punts, 2 turnovers, and allowed only 14 first downs, 257 net offensive yards; however, 3 big plays ruined the day.

Ohio State: Our defense played well except giving up the big plays. In the end, it simply wasn't a good enough effort. Ohio State adjusted, and opened up the big plays that we couldn't recover from.

Our rushing defense has fallen to #51 nationally, and total defense has plummeted to 66th nationally. We went down to being ranked #35 nationally in sacks and #34 in tackles for loss after being a national leader in these categories. We took a huge step backwards in the Illinois game by allowing Juice Williams all day to throw the ball coming up with zero sacks although we did have 11 tackles for loss for 35 yards. Then, our defense allows Toledo to maintain possession of the football for 19 of 30 minutes in the second half leading to two field goals including the game winner. In the Penn State game, we get no sacks, only two tackles for loss for 2 yards, one pass break up, one turnover, and allow 482 net yards, 22 first downs, 50% 3rd down conversions (7 of 14), 5 red zones, 2 big play TDs of 80 and 44 yards; it was truly a failing effort. Purdue ran all over us for 256 net yards and 4 rushing TDs; we had no sacks and no answers for 522 net offensive yards by the Boilermakers. Brandon Graham has guaranteed victory over Michigan State, but talk is cheap; actions will speak the loudest. Ohio State put 232 rushing yards on us including 3 rushing TDs.

Comments: Overall, Thompson had 53 tackles, 2.5 for loss, a blocked field goal and an interception for a TD plus 3 forced fumbles. He had zero tackles against Northwestern for the second week in a row. He had zero tackles against Minnesota, and when they ran the draw twice to the open side of the field, it exposed his weakness in tackling. Thompson was named Captain for the Notre Dame, Toledo and MSU games. Pass coverage from this position is lacking, and our opponents will continue to expoit this weakness. Thompson had a poor game against the Illini; he had 1.5 tackles. He should be played inside by Shafer and Hobson as he is not mobile enough to play the outside positon, and can't cover on passing situations. Evans started against Utah, and contributed 4 tackles; he did not have a good game. Artis Chambers had 4 tackles, and is no longer a Wolverine as he has left the team. We really need to upgrade this position in 2009. Look for Fitzgerald and Evans to be the leading candidates for this position in 2009, and Jelani Jenkins if we sign him. If I were coaching or had input, I might suggest that Stevie Brown move to SAM when obvious passing situations occur in a 3-3-5 scheme as he is good in run support, but more mobile than our linebackers in pass coverage. This would insert Williams into the Free Safety position in these situations.

Comments: Ezeh had 98 tackles, 7 for loss including one sack, a fumble recovery, an interception and 2 pass break ups to lead the defense. Ezeh did not have a good game against Purdue as he did not fill the gaps effectively in the Shafer 3-3-5 scheme that calls for solid linebacker gap play, and also played poorly against Ohio State with only 2 tackles. Fitzgerald saw action on the kickoff team, and had 7 tackles; he will probably move to SAM next year and backup MIKE.

Comments: Mouton had 76 tackles, 6.5 for loss, a forced fumble, a pass break up and a sack; he had a good, but not a great year. Mouton should be much better in 2009. Panter contributed on 8 tackles including .5 sack and a fumble recovery. Panter was named as a Captain for the Wisconsin game, and injured his shoulder so he missed the Toledo and Penn State games. Herron also contributed 7 tackles, mostly on special teams. Walk-on Leach has 2 tackles, and he recovered a fumble on the first punt; he has a high ankle sprain. Brandon Logan was named Captain for the Northwestern game, but didn't play all year. Kenny Demens redshirts after seeing action with one tackle, but didn't make either travel squad. Taylor Hill and Marcus Witherspoon have left the team, and have transferred to Penn State and Rutgers.

Comments: Our linebacking corps are adequate to above average against the run, but well below average to poor against the pass. They are not mobile enough, take poor angles on tackles, don't tackle well and there isn't great depth for the three positions. Ezeh is playing well enough to be 1st Team Big Ten, but there is a sharp drop off at the other positions and depth. Coach Hobson really needs to improve this position.

Comments: Trent has 41 tackles, 2.5 for loss, two pass break ups and 3 interceptions. He knocked Decker out of the Minnesota game with a great hit. He was burned for 2 passing TDs against the Irish, another late TD against the Badgers. He had only one tackle against Illinois, and no pass break ups. Trent has been good on run support, and did have a much better 2nd half against the Irish; however, the game was already decided by halftime. Cissoko split time with Trent against MSU. Wolfolk contributed 9 tackles, and had a big fumble recovery when Warren fumbled the punt return.

Comments: Donovan Warren moved to Free Safety because of poor play by Brown and Harrison, but moved back to corner against Minnesota, Northwestern and Ohio State. Warren had 53 tackles, 3.5 for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception and 4 pass break ups, but he doesn't look ready for the NFL. Apparently, he fought a quadricep injury; he didn't play against Toledo. Warren was burned for a TD on 3rd and 18 after a sack to tie the game against Northwestern in the 3rd quarter. Warren and Stewart were burned for the 77 yard TD by Cumberland to start the 2nd half. Cissoko got his first start as a Wolverine against Toledo, and contributed 15 tackles, 1 for loss and three pass break ups against Purdue, Illinois, MSU and Toledo. Doug Dutch backed up Warren and Cissoko, but saw little action. Walk-on from Morenci, Zac Johnson, had 8 tackles on special teams, and did a great job in punt coverage.

He works and tries hard, but we really need better safety play. Michael Williams contributed 18 tackles, 2 for loss and one sack plus a blocked punt; he is contributing more with poor safety play by Harrison, Brown and Stewart. Williams missed the trip to Purdue because of a concussion.

Comments: The best one can say about our defensive backfield is that it was not a very good group. Pass efficiency defense ranked 81st nationally! We did not show a great ability to cover receivers nor stop drives when needed, and they have allowed 19 TD passes in 12 games, and our linebackers and backs had only 22 pass break ups in those 12 games with 9 interceptions. We are ranked 9th in the Big Ten in pass defense, and 87th nationally! This group allowed one receiver to set a Michigan Stadium record with 20 receptions, and allowed Toledo to maintain a huge 2nd half time of possession advantage leading to two field goals that decided the game.

We are ranked 10th in the Big 10 in scoring defense and pass efficiency defense, and 9th in total defense and pass defense to go with 6th in rushing defense. Nationally, we rank 66th in total defense, 90th in scoring defense. Brandon Graham is the only player who will make 1st team All Big Ten. Defensive Backfield is particularly weak, and Linebacking is below average overall and pathetic on pass coverage. Our defensive line is mediocre. Although a by product of a poor offense means keeping the defense out on the field way too much, there was no excuse for our poor play and giving up so many big plays in 2008.

Harrison has 6 returns for 111 yards. Sam McGuffie has 7 returns for 148 yards, and a fumble. Shaw had a 12 yarder, and 2 turnovers. Stonum got a 24 yarder as Harrison tired playing defense. Avery Horn has 104 yards in 5 returns, and made a poor decision trying to run out a kick deep in the end zone after fumbling. James Rogers got a 24 yarder against Toledo. Moundros got a one yard return. Kickoff return team is ranked 58th nationally with a 21.44 yard average, and 5 turnovers. They are getting a lot of reps with other teams scoring on us so often.

Special Teams was not good in 2008. Offensively, kickoff return team sucks with 5 turnovers, a mediocre 21.44 average on 64 kicks with a long of 53 yards ranking them 58th nationally. Punt returns ranked 66th nationally. Our field goal and extra point team has not been good either, and certainly inconsistent. Lopata's miss could have salvaged the game in overtime, and we had a blocked field goal against Northwestern plus a missed red zone conversion against Ohio State. Defensively, our kickoff coverageranked 8th in the Big Ten, and although our net punting is #5 in the nation; we managed to have a punt blocked against Penn State. We also blocked a couple field goals, a few punts and two extra points. Overall, we do not have good special teams, and attribute special teams play to coaching!
