He caught his first TD pass and got his first start as a Wolverine against Northwestern. Brandon Moore was the third tight end, and caught a red zone pass for 9 yards against Purdue. Mike Kwiatkowski played against Minnesota and Purdue, but didn't make the travel team to Northwestern or Illinois. He did make the travel team to East Lansing. Ricardo Miller wasn't on the depth chart, but did play on special teams in all 13 games; he took a block in the back penalty on one punt return. Devin Funchess and A.J. Williams have committed for 2012. We have 2 other walk-ons with Esterline and Allspach. John Haarer is no longer on the roster. Chris Barnett couldn't cut it, and transferred. Comments on Receivers: 155 catches for 2377 yards, 22 TDs and 15 interceptions. Coach Borgess, Coach Hecklinski and the receivers were not the best passing team around, but did what was needed to win 11 games. Give them a B- for effort, blocking and clutch catches when we needed them. We averaged 12 catches and 183 yards per game as a unit. We ranked 7th in the Big Ten and 90th in the nation in passing offense. We lose Hemingway, Odoms, Koger annd Watson, and gain Stonum, Darboh, Chesson, Funchess and Williams so hopefully we'll be much improved in 2012.

Comments: Changes in Offense, Positions come in stride for Huyge Mark Huyge started all 13 games, and did a good job overall. Elliot Mealer also saw action in the opener and Minnesota. Eric Gunderson came in against Nebraska, EMU and Purdue. Walk-ons Graham Glasgow (Glasgow explains switch) and Dallas Williams redshirted. Gary Yerden walked-on; however, he quit the team. Tony Posada has left the team, transferred to South Florida; he reported way overweight.

Comments: Dave Molk started 12 games, played on one good leg in the Sugar Bowl and won the Rimington Award as the best Center in the nation. Khoury was the backup, and got some snaps against EMU; he also started the Sugar Bowl, but Molk came back in after the first series when Denard fumbled two of his 3 snaps. Recruit Jack Miller looked good in Fall practice, and made the travel teams to Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern and MSU and redshirted. Christian Pace took a medical scholarship due to knee issues. Comments: Taylor Lewan started all 13 games, and handled all the defensive ends he faced on pass rushes. He was hobbling during Sugar Bowl warm-ups so he played while not being 100%. He and Molk were our two best offensive linemen. Mealer came in against MSU.

Offensive Line: Our offensive line has done a nice job this year. The rushing attack continued improve, and we had two 1,000 yard rushers for the first time since 1976 with Touissaint and Robinson. Give this group and Coach Funk an A- for the season.

Comments: Kenny Demens led the defense with 94 tackles, 5 for loss, 3 sacks, 2 pass break ups and a forced fumble in 13 games to lead the defense in tackles. Mike Jones was the first backup at MIKE, and contributed 4 tackles. J.B. Fitzgerald had 10 tackles, 6 on kickoff team, a big forced fumble in the Sugar Bowl and served as Demen's 2nd backup. Marell Evans has had grade issues with his transfer from Hampton so he could have played, but was unable to; he may be asking for a 6th year to play in 2012. Isaiah Bell didn't play a down in the 2010 or 2011 seasons on defense or special teams. Comments: Jordan Kovacs Feature on Big Ten Network Jordan Kovacs led the defensive backfield with 75 tackles, 8 for loss including 4 sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble that Brandon Herron returned for a 29 yard TD and a pass break up. Apparently, Kovacs hurt his knee and didn't play against Purdue, and wasn't 100% against Iowa, Nebraska or Ohio State. Jared Van Slyke has two tackles plus a pass break up, and backed up Kovacs and Woolfolk along with Furman. Walk-on Floyd Simmons was also a factor at Safety, and did make the travel team to Illinois, Iowa Northwestern and MSU; he had a big game against Nebraska with a forced fumble on a kickoff, and he now has 3 tackles for the season. Simmons was our leading special teams tackler in 2010. Matt Cavanaugh played on special teams and has 10 tackles to lead our special teams corps. Zac Johnson also made the travel team to Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern and MSU. Tamani Carter redshirted. Marvin Robinson had 10 tackles, one on special teams and a forced fumble; he started against the Irish, but did not make the travel team to Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern or MSU due to a concussion in practice? or so we've been told. Marvin Robinson charged with 2nd degree home invasion (Court appearance November 16) ESPN story

Comments: Thomas Gordon had 61 tackles, 6 on special teams, 1 for loss, 2 forced fumbles, a team leading 4 fumble recoveries, 2 pass break ups and an interception. Gordon didn't play at all against Iowa as Troy Woolfolk was given the start, but Woolfolk was the backup against Nebraska; he contributed 30 tackles for the season and got his first pass break up of the season against the Huskers. Josh Furman was one of the leading tacklers on special teams; he had 8 tackles and blocked a punt. Carvin Johnson had 12 tackles, played on special teams against the Irish and EMU; however, he left the team to seek a transfer (probably to Arizona to reunite with Tony Gibson) due to the move of Woolfolk to Free Safety that moved him from 2nd to 3rd sting. Ray Vinopal transferred to Pittsburgh.

Comments on Defensive Backs: Overall, you'd have to be pleased with the defensive back play especially since we had little depth. As a group, they had over 35% of the total team defensive tackles, 6 interceptions (two in the red zone), 12 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, 7 fumble recoveries, 23 pass break ups and only a few big plays, Moore (Countess) and Posey (Woolfolk) against Ohio, TD of 54 yards against Nebraska (T.Gordon), TD of 48 yards against Purdue (Woolfolk) and Knile Davis' 44 yard play against Iowa. White did get 11 receptions in the first game, but broke no big plays. Floyd had 13 catches, but zero TDs. We had a hard time handling Virginia Tech's big wide receivers, but we contained them without any TDs or big plays. Give Mallory and the DBs an A- for for scheme and execution in 13 games. Chris Spielman's analysis of "head up" on tackling is something we need to do more.

Comments: Wile had 64 kickoffs for a 63.0 yard average, 14 touchbacks and 3 out of bounds. The kickoff coverage team improved. They ranked 57th nationally and 5th in the Big Ten. They did take a penalty against MSU for not being lined up correctly. Some of the players spotted on the kickoff coverage included: Brennan Beyer, Matt Cavanaugh, Troy Woolfolk, Carvin Johnson, Courtney Avery, Brandon Herron, Frank Clark, Matt Wile, Cam Gordon, Floyd Simmons, Delonte Hollowell, etc. Courtney Avery and Floyd Simmons forced fumbles against Nebraska and Ohio State, and J.B. Fitzgerald force a critical fumble in the Sugar Bowl. Terrence Robinson scooped up the fumble on the last play of the Notre Dame game, but he fumbled just before the goal line so it was ruled as a touchback.

Gibbons won the Placekicking duties for extra points and field goals from 43 yards and in, and Wile will kick from 44 yards and out. Gibbons was 54 of 55 on extra points, and hit 13 of his 17 field goal attempts including the game winner in overtime at the Sugar Bowl. Will Campbell was in at offensive guard on the extra point team. Matt Wile strong Fall Camp may lead to history: Placekicking, Kickoffs and Punting! Broekhuisen Not Giving Up

Comments: Drew Dileo was our holder for 13 games, and came up with two big fake field goal runs setting up red zone first downs for our offense to convert two TDs. In the Sugar Bowl, he completed an unlikely 11 yard pass to snapper Jared Glanda for a first down after it was tipped by Virginia Tech. On the dark side, he muffed the extra point against Iowa. Jeremy Gallon was our backup.

Comments: Will Hagerup was suspended the first 4 games, and punted 27 times for a mediocre 36 yard average, 5 inside the 20, one touchback and 7 fair catches. He also fumbled a snap against Ohio State which led to a drive at our 32, and resulted in a field goal. As a result of two poor Sugar Bowl punts of 24 and 26 yards, he was replaced by Matt Wile. Wile had 17 punts for a 41.6 yard average including a 58 yarder in the Sugar Bowl, four fair caught and four downed inside the 20. Wile looked much better than Hagerup. Our net punting ranked 107th in the nation and 12th in the Big Ten.

Comments: Jeremy Gallon had 19 returns for 192 yards, and many fair catches; he made much better decisions and recovered a fumble that hit off J.T. Floyd against San Diego State. We ranked 54th nationally in punt returns and 5th in the Big Ten. Drew Dileo backed him up and had two fair catches against Minnesota. On the punt return team, I observed Steve Watson, J.B. Fitzgerald, John McColgan, Floyd Simmons, Thomas Gordon, Josh Furman, Blake Countess, Tom Pomarico, Jeremy Gallon, Gregg Brown, etc.

Comments: Martavious Odoms had 19 for 403 yards. Vincent Smith had 7 returns for 129 yards, Kevin Grady had 3 returns for 57 yards, Jeremy Gallon had 3 for 46 yards, Kevin Koger had one for eight yards and Mike Cox had a 2 yarder to start the Sugar Bowl. As a team, we averaged 19.45 on 33 kickoffs which ranked us 100th nationally and 10th in the Big Ten. I observed these players participating on the kickoff return team: Steve Watson, Kevin Koger, Ricardo Miller, Jared Van Slyke, Junior Hemingway, Floyd Simmons, Jeremy Jackson, Vincent Smith, Kevin Grady, etc.

Special Teams Comments: Give Coach Ferrigno a B+ for improved special teams play. We are a much better team on punt returns, punt coverage, and kickoff coverage. We still need more improvement in placekicking extra points, field goals, punting and kickoff returns. 59 players have played on Special Teams in 2011-2012: Tony Anderson, Courtney Avery, Brennan Beyer, Jibreel Black, Nate Brink, Gregg Brown, Will Campbell, Matt Cavanaugh, Frank Clark, Blake Countess, Mike Cox, Kenny Demens, Drew Dileo, J.B.
