Offensively, we have a great running attack with a pretty solid offensive line, and one of the best running backs in NCAA Football with Blake Corum; the return of Donovan Edwards gives us a great 1-2 punch with the ability to catch the ball as well. Our passing game showed how dangerous it can be against Ohio State; J.J. McCarthy is still developing, and he is already one of the best in the nation. We have also been slowed by offensive injuries to Keegan, Edwards, Barnhart, Wilson, All, Hayes, and McNamara.

Hayes-El-Hadi-Anderson-Atteberry-T.Jones

Gentry-Stewart-Crippen-Bounds

Our offensive line repeated as the best offensive line in NCAA Football in 2022. The injuries to Keegan, Hayes, and Barnhart hurt, and depth was a real problem. Sherrone Moore has really killed it the last two years with back to back Joe Moore Awards, and he has 3 transfers for 2023 with Myles Hinton, LaDarius Henderson, and Drake Nugent ready to fill gaps with recruits, Evan Link, Amir Herring, and Nathan Efobi. Hayes and Olawatimi are leaving; Keegan may return, but Zinter is most likely leaving for the NFL.

This year's defense is very good, but not great. Our strength is the defensive line anchored by Smith and Jenkins with a good group of solid edge rushers: Morris, Harrell, Okie, Upshaw, McGregor and Derrick Moore. Our linebacking is weak, and we'll never be a great defense unless our linebacking significantly improves. The injury to Hill-Green has really hurt as we lack depth as well, and have to play true freshmen, Rolder and Pollard, way too early. Our defensive backfield has been steady and solid with strong corner play by Green and Turner, and the three safeties: Rod Moore, Paige, and Moten. Moten is very athletic, but lacks aggressiveness and anticipation skills; he also is regulary out of position. Our young linemen, Graham, Benny, and Grant are improving each week, and gaining confidence.

Harrell-Jenkins-Smith-Morris

Moore/Okie-Graham-Grant-McGregor/Upshaw

Benny-Goode-Guy/Welschof

The play of the defensive line has been excellent, and the adjustments planned to give both Okie and Moore increased playing time should increase our pressure as Harrell and Upshaw aren't nearly as effective. Our defensive line is in good hands with Mike Elston as far as scheme, adjustments, coaching and recruiting; I have a lot of confidence in Elston moving ahead this season, and in future seasons.

Junior Colson on August 12 Kalel Mullings had one start with action in 12 games with 11 tackles; he backed up both MIKE and WILL, and his performance has been sub-par. Mullings was injured and didn't travel to Rutgers nor did he play against Nebraska, but returned against Illinois, Ohio State, and Purdue. Jimmy Rolder contributed 11 tackles; he has played in all 14 games backing up MIKE with the injury to Hill-Green, and contributed on special teams with 2 tackles. Jaydon Hood and Tyler McLaurin played on special teams; Hood got 3 tackles on defense in the Hawaii game while McLaurin didn't see action on defense. Nikhai Hill-Green worked through some "soft tissue" injury, but didn't play at all this season nor traveled so he redshirted. Semaj Bridgeman and Hayden Moore signed for 2023, and we've added Freshman Nebraska Linebacker, Ernest Hausmann, as a transfer!

As I feared at the start of the season, our linebacking is weak particularly with the loss of Hill-Green, and the freshmen aren't yet ready to step up. It will continue to be an area exploited by our opponents the rest of this season.

Steve Clinksdale is an excellent coach and recruiter; one can see improvement in the secondary since he came aboard. We still have concerns at Safety, but Makari Paige is a much better option than Moten; Moten could move to Linebacker in 2023. Our depth in the secondary is a problem; Will Johnson has really improved as the season wore on. Mike Sainristil has been a great addition at Nickel.
