Observations on the win over Hawaii, 56-10

J.J. McCarthy hit 11 of 12 passes for 229 yards and 3 TDs; he ran once for 16 yards. Michigan converted 5 red zones for 35 points, and amassed 588 total yards of offense in 55 plays with 268 on the ground and 23 first downs. Blake Corum ran 9 times for 88 yards with a TD. Donovan Edwards ran 3 times for 26 yards and a TD plus caught a 33 yarder. Roman Wilson caught a 42 yard TD, and ran a reverse in from 21 yards for a second TD. Cornelius Johnson caught 2 passes for 71 yards and a TD. Ronnie Bell caught 6 passes for 74 yards and a TD. In the second half, Michigan ran only 23 plays with their second unit rushing the ball mostly. C.J. Stokes racked up 61 yards in 8 carries for a TD, and Isaiah Gash ran 3 times for 48 yards for a TD. Tavierre Dunlap, Danny Hughes and Leon Franklin aslo got carries. Cade McNamara was sacked twice for -17 yards, and was 2 of 4 for 65 yards; he threw an interception in the 3rd quarter. Davis Warren hit 2 of 4 passes for 65 yards, and ran once for 11 yards; Warren led the Wolverines to two TD drives.

Defense held Joey Yellen to 13 of 36 for only 113 yards; Hawaii exploded for 10 points in the second half against our second unit defense behind a rushing attack led by Tylan Hines who burst for a 54 yard TD in the 4th quarter. In all, Hawaii dominated second half time of possession to give them a 5 minute overall advantage resulting in 14 more offensive plays. The Rainbows were forced into 10 punts and had two red zones for 3 points. While the defense only had one sack, they hurried Yellen all evening, and had 7 pass break ups or tipped passes with two quarterback hits. R.J. Moten and Cade Kolesar led the defense with 4 tackles each; the Wolverines played 40 players on defense.

Special Teams were solid behind Jake Moody with all kickoffs for touchbacks except one which was returned only 23 yards. Brad Robbins punted 4 times with one downed inside the 20. A.J. Henning had 5 punt returns for 39 yards including a 35 yarder. Jake Thaw had a nice 20 yard punt return called back on a penalty by Carter Selzer.
