Wilde, Matt 8 QB 7 Fr. 6'2" 186 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: After 13 games, Navarre ranks 35th in passing efficiency with a 136.1 rating (#3 in the Big Ten); he ranks #18 in passing (#2 in the Big Ten), #30 in total offense (#2 in the Big Ten) and is one of seven finalists for the Johnny Unitas Award and a semi-finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award. We rank #28 as a team with only 9 passes intercepted, and 24th as a team in passing offense (#2 in the Big Ten behind MSU). We average over 23.8 first downs per game (#2 in the Big Ten) with 49.4% 3rd down conversion efficiency (#2 in the Big Ten) and 61.1% on 4th down (#3 in the Big Ten). We are #9 in scoring offense and #12 in total offense (#2 in the Big Ten). His touchdown to interception ratio is 24 to 10 for +14; he was been sacked 24 times in 13 games, and has been responsible for 12.2 points per game (#33 in the nation). Our red zone offense is #1 in the Big Ten with 47 conversions (38 TDs) of 54 attempts. Navarre has thrown 72 TDs in his career which means he is now the Michigan recordholder and 2 behind Chuck Long's 74 as #2 in Big Ten history; Drew Brees is #1 with 90. Navarre finishes his career at Michigan as #3 in passing attempts, #5 in completions and #4 in passing yards in the Big Ten. Gutierrez is a solid backup, and should start for 2004; Henne and Richard will compete for the backup job.

Fullback (H-Back)

Dudley, Kevin 32 FB-H Back 1 Jr. 6'1" 235 Starter 4.55 n/a 300 800 3
Thompson, Brian 35 FB-H Back 2 Fr. 6'2" 235 Backup 4.65 n/a n/a 20 3.4

Presley, Jim 46 FB-H Back 4 Fr. 6'2" 218 Redshirt 4.43 n/a 375 19/1020 2.9

Comments: Dudley has proved to be a solid blocker, and unfortunately did not carry the ball once in 13 games; he did catch 3 passes. Thompson is coming along gradually and had 13 receptions. Oluigbo has moved over for support. The addition of Sanderson for 2004 with new recruit Allison should help immensely.

Tailback
Perry-Sr.-1st Team All-American, All Big Ten-1st Team, Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Walter Camp Finalist(5), Heisman Finalist(4), Doak Walker Winner, Team MVP

Campbell, Anton 9 TB 7 Fr. 5'11" 193 Redshirt 4.45 36" 330 18 2.8

Comments: We are currently ranked #30 nationally with 186.5 yards per game. Perry has proven to be one of the nation's best and is a bonafide Heisman, Maxwell and Doak Walker candidate; he is currently ranked #5 in rushing with 132.4 yards per game average, and is #6 in all-purpose yards with 162.9 per game. He had 44 receptions and leads the team in scoring with 120 points. Bracken is now the backup with Underwood, Rembert and Jackson competing for playing time. We redshirted Anton Campbell and he could move to defense. The addition of Max Martin and Mike Hart should really raise the bar of competition for 2004.

Flanker

Lafer, Brian 36 FL 4 Fr. 5'11" 195 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Avant had 47 receptions and Breaston has 38; they've demonstrated they are "go to" guys, and will continue to be threats. We'll continue to surprise opponents with reverses and crossing routes. Bell had 8 receptions.

Kessler, Ross 22 WR 7 So. 6'2" 204 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Edwards had 85 receptions (#17 in reception average per game) and 85.9 yards average (#25 nationally) per game with 14 TDs. Tabb is seeing more playing time, and had 10 receptions including 2 big ones against the Bucks. Gonzalez has recovered from a broken hand, but only had one catch. Butler started against CMU, but hasn't logged too many minutes in the last ten games; he had 3 catches. Adrian Arrington, Doug Dutch and Morgan Trent has pledged for next year, and Grant Mason has transferred from Stanford.

Kraus, Adam 83 TE 8 Fr. 6'6" 273 Redshirt 4.9 n/a 300 25 2.7

Comments: Massaquoi has been a disappointment so far with only 15 catches in 13 games for 2 TDs. Mingery started the last seven games, and has 4 receptions and two TDs. Ecker had 7 catches and Fisher has one. We have recruited Mike Massey for this position. We'll need to get better here for 2004.

Right Tackle
Pape-Sr.-All Big Ten-1st Team, 2nd Team All-American
Solomon-Sr.
Riley
Pape, Tony 77 RT 1 Sr. 6'6" 311 1st Team All Big Ten 5.15 n/a 400 23 4

Long, Jake 77 RT 4 Fr. 6'7" 303 Redshirt 5 n/a 340 n/a 2.7

Comments: Pape was an Outland and Lombardi trophy candidate! Our offensive line allowed 24 sacks in 13 games. Solomon backed up. Kolodziej or Riley will probably compete here for starter in 2004. New recruits here include Alex Mitchell, Brett Gallimore and Jeremy Ciulla.

Right Guard
Lentz
Henige
Lentz, Matt 67 RG 1 So. 6'6" 304 Starter 5.2 n/a 375 n/a n/a

Berishaj, Tom 71 RG 3 Fr. 6'4" 325 Redshirt 5.1 n/a 375 30 n/a

Comments: Lentz had a good year, and he should be one of the best in the Big Ten in 2004. Henige took over the backup duties; he is about 340-350 lbs. Berishaj redshirted and is ready for action, but hasn't been in one game yet.

Center
Pearson-Sr.-All Big Ten-2nd Team

Sharrow, Pat 68 C 4 Fr. 6'3" 287 Redshirt 4.9 n/a 390 n/a 3.6

Comments: Pearson was a Rimington nominee! Bihl beat out Christopfel as backup. Sharrow will redshirt.

Left Guard
Baas-All Big Ten 1st Team, 2nd Team All-American
Morgan-Sr.
Gaston
Baas, David 75 LG 1 Jr. 6'5" 323 1st Team All Big Ten 5.1 n/a 340 930 2.8

Schoonover, Dave 69 LG 4 So. 6'3" 285 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Baas was All-Big Ten first team last year. Morgan is the little used backup. Grant DeBenedictis will move here for 2004 in a position that is notorius for "pulling" and is usually the speedier of the two guard positions.

Left Tackle
Stenavich
Kolodziej

Stenavich, Adam 79 LT 1 So. 6'5" 310 Backup 5 n/a 320 26 3.9
Kolodziej, Mike 76 LT 2 Fr. 6'7" 306 Redshirt 4.95 n/a n/a 20 3.7

Comments: Stenavich was the starter; Kolodziej is a solid backup.

Defensive End-Rush
Stevens-All Big Ten-2nd Team

Biggs, Rondell 91 DE-Anchor 3 Fr. 6'2" 259 Backup n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Stevens had 29 tackles with 8 for loss and 4 sacks, but has been slowed with a foot injury. Woodley backed up, and has 23 tackles, 4 for loss and 2 sacks. Kashama had 10 tackles, 4 for loss and 2 big sacks against the Buckeyes. We have Tim Jamison for this position in 2004.

Nose Tackle
Bowman-Sr.-Co-Captain-2nd Team All Big Ten
Watson
Bowman, Grant 60 DT-NG 1 Sr. 6'1" 288 2nd Team-All Big Ten 4.7 n/a 390 1130 3.2

Hull, David 53 DT-NG 4 Fr. 6'1" 255 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Bowman had 36 tackles in 13 games, 11 tackles for loss including 3 sacks. Watson saw lots of action, and had 13 tackles, one for loss; he really "cloggs" up the middle. Watson is listed at 337 (down from 358) and Harrison at 304 (down from 321) so we'll have the possibility of two of the largest defensive tackles ever playing at Michigan. Paul will probably redshirt and "grow" into the position.

Defensive Tackle
Heuer-Sr.
Harrison
Ofili
Heuer, Norm 90 DT-Wide 1 Sr. 6'5" 288 Starter; Honorable Mention All Big Ten 4.59 n/a 305 n/a n/a

Bell, Derek 63 DT-Wide 4 So. 6'4" 275 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Heuer had 16 tackles in 12 games, 3 for loss including one sack; he knocked Krenzel out of the game with a big hit. Harrison has 11 tackles, 3 for loss, in 12 games as the back up. Ofili had 3 tackles in 5 games with one sack, but hasn't played much in Big Ten action. Our rushing defense was our "weak link" in 2003 and is ranked 25th nationally with 120.7 yards allowed per game, but greatly improved following the Minnesota game. Will Johnson, Alan Branch and Marques Walton are new recruits here, but Johnson tore an ACL and will miss his senior season rehabilitating after surgery.

Defensive End-Anchor
Massey

Kashama
Stevens, Larry 13 DE-Rush 1 Sr. 6'3" 257 2nd Team All Big Ten 4.55 37" 285 780 2.8

Woodley, Lamarr 56 DE-Rush 3 Fr. 6'2" 263 Backup n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Massey has moved to starter here after alternating with Kashama, and having Woodley beat him out for the starter after the Minnesota game; he has 23 tackles, 8 for loss, 2 sacks, 1 pass break up and one forced fumble. Van Alstyne had 5 tackles, two for loss including one sack, one fumble recovery and one pass break up; he is back from an earlier knee injury.

Outside Linebacker-Sam

Crable, Shawn 2 OLB-Sam 4 Fr. 6'5" 223 Redshirt n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Woods had 63 tackles with 14 for loss including 6 sacks, 2 quarterback hurries and one forced fumble to lead our defense; he has improved every game, but his playing time has been limited due to injuries. Manning is backing up and has 21 tackles (2 for loss); we see him a lot in passing situations especially in the red zone coverage. Joe Sarantos is adding needed depth with 15 tackles.

Comments: Diggs has 56 tackles in 12 games including 7 for loss, 1 sack, one pass break up and one forced fumble; McClintock has 37 tackles, 3 for loss in 12 games as the backup with one sack, one pass break up, one quarterback hurry, one interception and one fumble recovery. David Harris is also one solid player, but we lost him for the season due to a knee injury. Chris Graham and Chris Rogers have committed to play here.

Comments: Reid had 82 tackles in 13 games with 5 for loss including one sack, 3 pass break ups and two fumble recoveries; he was our team's tackling leader, and has improved every game. Kaufman has moved to MIKE backing up Diggs and McClintock and has 5 tackles; Burgess is backing Reid and had 5 tackles against the Illini and 15 overall; he had one pass break up against MSU. The competition between SAM and WILL linebackers will be heated for playing time and rotations.

Defensive Back-Wideside
Markus Curry-2nd Team All Big Ten

Curry, Markus 30 WCB 1 Jr. 5'11" 181 Starter; 2nd Team All Big Ten 4.3 n/a 315 n/a n/a

Englemon, Brandent 31 WCB 4 Fr. 5'11" 190 Redshirt n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Michigan is ranked #6 nationally in pass defense, and #4 in pass defense efficiency! What a difference Ron English has made! We are also ranked #7 nationally in total defense and #7 in scoring defense. We are only allowing 152.3 yards per game in passing, and only 9 passing TD's all season. We are the #1 defense in the Big Ten in 3rd down conversion percentage with only 27.2%, and we have only allowed 26 red zone opportunities in 12 games (the least in the Big Ten). Markus Curry has been impressive with 48 tackles, 1 for loss with 2 interceptions, 12 pass break ups, 1 forced fumble and a fumble return for a TD. When those 9 TD passes were thrown against us, not many were thrown on Curry's side of defense. Hood is the backup, but has seen little action and only has 8 tackles. We have already recruited the pledges of Jamar Adams, Keston Cheathem and Charles Stewart here.

Defensive Back-Shortside

Comments: LeSueur has 47 tackles, 4 for loss, 12 pass break ups, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble despite the shoulder injury. True freshman, Leon Hall, has 26 tackles, one for loss, 3 interceptions (leading the team) and 5 pass break ups. We are really solid at the corners with LeSueur, Curry and Hall!

Comments: Shazor has 57 tackles in 11 games; 8 for loss including 2 sacks, 5 pass break ups, one forced fumble and 2 interceptions. Stewart has been an impressive backup with 22 tackles and one interception for a TD, but was hurt his knee against Illinois and hasn't seen action since. He did start against Indiana and returned a pick for a touchdown against Minnesota. Mundy also has some type of hand or wrist injury although he was moved to cornerback prior to the injury to Stewart; he had 10 tackles.

Comments: Rivas is now the starter; he is now 29 of 30 on PATs and 9 of 11 in field goals. We rank 8th in the Big Ten in PAT and #6 in field goals. We rank #82 in kickoff returns, and rank #6 in the Big Ten in kickoff coverage with allowing opponents 20.3 yards per return. Nienberg has done a good job on kickoffs, and has an especially strong leg at home.

Booth, Turner 61 Snapper 2 Fr. 6'2" 286 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Snaps have been good except the fake punt against Oregon. I'm sure others will work here like Sharrow, Bihl, etc.

Ross, Ryan 3 P 3 Fr. 6'0" 207 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Finley was 2nd team All-Big Ten last year and a Ray Guy nominee, but is ranked #79 nationally this year with a 39.67 average per punt. Our net punting is the worst in the Big Ten and ranked #113 nationally with 31.25 net yards per punt (we might as well "go for it.")

Punt Returns
Breaston
Curry

Comments: Breaston is averaging 14 yards per return, and is ranked #9 nationally. He's already set a Michigan record for punt return yardage in a season, and with 3 years of eligibility remaining, will go down as our greatest punt returner ever (Anthony Carter and David Brown included). He is definitely making teams take notice. Michigan is ranked #16 nationally in punt returns as a team; however, we are ranked #113 in net punting.

Kickoff Returns
LeSueur-Sr.
Bracken and Rembert

Comments: LeSueur gives us consistency, but no real threat on kickoffs! He has a 20.6 yard per return average on 8 returns; Breaston has 7 returns for a 19.8 per return average. Carl Tabb has 5 returns for a 15.8 per return average. Others who may work here include: Hood, Bracken (3 for 23.3), Rembert (1 for 14), Perry, Edwards, Jerome or Marlin Jackson, etc. We rank 82nd in the nation as a team in kickoff returns.
