Cunningham, Kyle 9 QB 7 Fr. 6'2" 190 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Henne was 240 of 399 with 24 TDs and 12 interceptions (+12); this ranks him 42nd nationally in passing efficiency with a 132.56 rating. That is excellent for a true freshman! He was the first true freshman to ever start the Rose Bowl. He has a bright future as the first 4 year starter since Rick Leach. Our passing offense is ranked 45th nationally with 232.9 yards per game Our total offense ranks 46th nationally with only 386.5 yard per game average. Our scoring offense is ranked 34th with a 30.83 per game average. We were 39 of 48 in the red zone (81%) with 25 TDs and 14 field goals. We were 90 of 206 in 3rd/4th down conversions for 43.7%. Purdue held us to 33% conversion rate and Ohio State limited us to 27.7% with their blitzes, and rushing a freshman quartback into mistakes is the key to success against us. Richard appears to be a capable backup, and dangerous throwing the ball.

Fullback (H-Back)
Dudley

Allison (Redshirt)
Dudley, Kevin 32 FB-H Back 1 Sr. 6'1" 236 Starter 4.55 n/a 310 800 3

Van Beek, Eric 49 FB-H Back 5 Fr. 6'0" 195 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Dudley proved to be a solid blocker, rushed 3 times for 13 yards and caught 5 receptions for 32 yards. He did an outstanding job on Butkus winner, Derrick Johnson, in the Rose Bowl. Oluigbo beats out Thompson as backup, and Allison will work here for backup position for 2005. Brian Thompson had a critical onside kick recovery against the Spartans after we kicked the field goal to make the score 13-27. Scheme uses fullback/h-back strictly for blocking and occassional screen passes, and contributes to making our offense one dimensional so our opponents can concentrate on our wideouts and/or keying on Hart.

Wilson, Fred 18 TB 10 Fr. 5'10" 167 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Hart ranked 10th in the nation and #1 in the Big Ten in rushing by netting 1455 yards in 282 attempts (5.2 yards per carry) for a 121.2 yard per game average and 9 TDs; he also had 26 catches with 1 TD for an 19.8 yard average per game. He is very dangerous on the screen passes. He ranks 26th nationally in all-purpose yards with 141 per game. He is the only running back in Michigan football history with three 200+ yard rushing games in a row. Our first backup is now Max Martin. Rembert was not on the Rose Bowl roster so he probably has quit or transferred. Nobody knows why Jerome Jackson isn't seeing more backup duty, but he did play on kickoff coverage against Northwestern and Ohio State. He may move to Strong Safety in the Spring. Underwood and Bracken both played against Northwestern, but didn't contribute much in their senior years.

Flanker
Edwards
Breaston

Dutch/Trent (Redshirt)

Smith, Landon 12 FL 6 So. 5'8" 166 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Edwards was an All-American in 2004, and won the Biletnikoff Award for best receiver. He was named 2004 Big Ten Player of the Year. Edwards ranks 5th with a 111 yard average, and 2nd in receptions with an average of nearly 8.1 per game (97 total) and 15 TDs in 12 games. Breaston is a breakaway threat every time he touches the ball, but has been hampered by his foot and hand injuries; he had 34 catches (3 TDs) for a 26.5 yards per game average. Gonzales had 7 receptions and one TD. Morgan Trent and Doug Dutch redshirted.

Wide Receiver

Matsos, Chris 80 WR 4 Jr. 6'0" 208 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Avant had 38 catches and 3 TDs averaging 40.6 yards per game; he made 2nd team All-Big Ten. Tabb was without a catch in 2004, and saw little action. Arrington had two catches as a true frosh with limited playing time.

Studenski, Matt 94 TE 7 Jr. 6'3" 219 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Massaquoi had 18 for the year (no TDs), but he caught the critical 2 point conversion in the 3rd overtime against MSU; he earned 1st Team All-Big Ten. Ecker had 17 catches with 2 TDs including the game winner against the Gophers. Overall, one would have to be disappointed with the offensive production at this position with less than 3 catches per game for 28.4 yards, and only 2 TDs.

Right Tackle
Long
Gallimore (Redshirt)

Kolodziej, Mike 76 RT 2 So. 6'7" 324 Backup 4.95 n/a 320 20 3.7

Gallimore, Brett 74 RT 3 Fr. 6'4" 304 Redshirt 5.1 24" 350 n/a 2.7

Comments: Kolodziej started the first two games, but Long has solidified his starting position on the right side. Long earned 2nd Team All Big-Ten. Riley moves to start at Left Guard. New recruits, Jeremy Ciulla and Brett Gallimore, redshirted.

Right Guard

Lyall, Patrick 60 RG 4 Fr. 6'0" 285 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Lentz earned 1st Team All-Big Ten. Kraus and Bell are now backing up with the loss of Henige. Mitchell will redshirt in 2004, but will see playing time in 2005.

Bell, Derek 63 C 4 Jr. 6'4" 285 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Bihl started the first three games, but now backs up Baas. Baas earned 1st Team All-Big Ten for the second year in a row, and is a finalist for the Outland Award. He was the co-winner of the Rimington award signifying the nation's best center. We ranked 61st nationally in rushing! Our rushing offense delivered a 153.6 yard per game average, but couldn't manage even 100 net yards against Notre Dame, Ohio State, Iowa or Indiana.

Comments: Stenavich allowed several sacks, but earned 1st Team All-Big Ten. San Diego had 5, Iowa and MSU had 4, Northwestern 3, Indiana and Purdue had two each, but Minnesota and Ohio State only got one on Henne. We gave up more sacks than anyone in the Big Ten other than Iowa and Purdue with 29 in 12 games. Kolodziej will start the Rose Bowl with Stenavich disciplined. Comments: Massey had 37 tackles, 5 for loss including 5 sacks (leading the team), one pass break up and two blocked field goals against Purdue and Northwestern. Will Paul redshirted in 2003, and saw little action in 2004 by contributing only one tackle in six games.

Walton, Marques 95 DT-NG 3 Fr. 6'0" 301 Recruit 4.9 30" 405 25 2.5

Comments: Ofili started the first game, but Watson has started since. Watson was in on 37 tackles, seven for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. If he thinks he's going to play at the professional level, he has a long way to go. Ofili had 9 tackles, 4 for loss including two sacks and a fumble recovery. Marques Walton redshirts.

Branch, Alan 80 DT-Weakside 3 Fr. 6'6" 345 Recruit 5 n/a 355 n/a n/a

Comments: Biggs started the Miami game, but didn't play much after that. Massey moved over to get the start on the wide side after starting the first nine games on the strong side. Harrison had 24 tackles, one for loss and a pass break up; Biggs had 5 tackles in 11 games. Branch (345) had five tackles, two for loss and both were sacks. Our rushing defense has been our "weak link" , we ranked #39 nationally with 133.3 yards allowed per game. In our three losses, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Texas ran all over us.

Comments: Woods started against Ohio State, Miami, Purdue and Texas, but Woodley or Manning has started all the others. Van Alstyne returned and started his first game of the season against Northwestern, but won't be available for the Rose Bowl. Woods had 22 tackles (none in the Rose Bowl), two for loss plus a fumble recovery; Woodley had 70 tackles (tied for 2nd on the team with Reid), including 15 for loss (leading the team), four sacks (2nd on the team), four pass break ups and three forced fumbles (leading the team with Manning). Van Alstyne had 7 tackles including one for loss.

Comments: Manning had 39 tackles with 5 for loss including one sack, three pass break ups and three forced fumbles (tied with Woodley for team lead); unfortunately, he did not play against Ohio State due to injury. Crable played little this year; he had 5 tackles including one sack and 2 pass break ups. Jamison injured his knee so he'll be a medical redshirt in 2004 even though he was in on 4 tackles before the injury.

Comments: McClintock had 58 tackles (4th on the team), five for loss, one fumble recovery, two interceptions and four pass break ups in 11 games. Joe Sarantos beats out David Harris as the backup, and earned his first start against Northwestern. Harris started against Iowa, but did not dress for Minnesota and had 10 tackles with a forced fumble while Sarantos had 12 including two for loss.

Thompson, John 49 ILB-Will n/a Fr. 6'0" 214 Possibly ineligible 4.55 n/a 410 17 3.2

Comments: Reid had 70 tackles (tied for 2nd on the team with Woodley) including 12 for loss, 3 sacks, 3 pass break ups, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery for a TD and one pick. Burgess had 27 tackles, a Rose Bowl pick for 23 yards, one pass break up and recovered 2 fumbles so far in 10 games; many of us thought he'd contribute more this season. Michigan State targeted their running plays through this position, and succeeded immensely exposing our weakness at linebacker. Their delayed draw scheme worked well in drawing the defensive flow towards the rollout while cutting back isolating the linebacker and strong safety against the running back. They are calling new recruit, Chris Graham "the brick," and he looks great on kickoff coverage with 5 tackles in 12 games. Walk-ons Jeremy Read and Dan Moore add needed depth.

Comments: Marlin Jackson had 47 tackles, one pick, one sack, five tackles for loss, four pass break-ups and one forced fumble. Teams aren't throwing his way to make it a 10 on 10 game; he stopped Purdue All-American Stubblefield cold with one catch at Purdue, but let Santonio Holmes break a big play and score a TD pass. Our pass efficiency defense is ranked 33rd and our pass defense is ranked 43rd nationally allowing 203 yards per game. Ohio State completely shredded our pass defense.

Comments: Leon Hall had 48 tackles, one for loss, two fumble recoveries including the critical one to stop Purdue, two interceptions and 8 pass break-ups (leading the team). Markus Curry had 33 tackles, three interceptions (leading the team), three pass break ups and a forced fumble, but was beat out for the starting job by Hall. Veteran transfer Grant Mason and Darnell Hood saw a great deal of playing time in "nickel" packages; Mason had 20 tackles, one pass break up, one forced fumble and a pick for a TD. Hood had 7 tackles and a forced fumble in 12 games, and was our main flyer on punt return coverage.

Comments: Shazor led our defense this season with 84 tackles including 10 for loss, one pass break up, 2 interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 2 forced fumbles including the bonecrushing hit to win the Purdue game. He earned 1st Team All-Big Ten, 1st Team All-American and was a Thorpe finalist. I predect he will choose to enter the draft by his decision timetable of January 15th; he came to Michigan to play football and catapult his football career to be a professional. He is a solid player, but by no means ready for the Pros at safety; he may be able to contribute as a linebacker in a back up role for some teams. Stewart is an impressive backup and had two tackles and a pick, but hasn't played the last ten games due to a pulled hamstring; he didn't make the trip to Purdue. Anton Campbell moves over from running back and had 4 tackles on special teams in 11 games, and recovered a fumble in the Rose Bowl on punt coverage.

Comments: Mundy had 51 tackles this season (5th on the team) with 2 interceptions and one pass break up. He didn't look as good as most of us expected, and we've had several big plays get by him; however, he is the best we have and I'm sure he'll improve. We must remember, he is only a Sophomore. He did leave the Northwestern and Ohio State game with a stinger in the shoulder; Jamar Adams replaced him. Adams was in on 5 tackles in 9 games. Engelmon forced a fumble, and had 13 tackles while participating in 12 games. Barringer started six games last year, but is only seeing action on special teams; he had 5 tackles in 9 games and an important onside kickoff recovery against Minnesota. Barringer left the Northwestern game with a knee injury, and didn't play against Ohio State or the Rose Bowl.

Comments: Rivas was 19 for 24 (79%) in field goals (one blocked); 37 of 41 (90%) in extra points in 2004 puts him #11th nationally in field goals and 30th in scoring. He was our leading scorer with 94 points. Nienberg was solid in kickoffs with a 60.8 yard average in 70 kickoffs with 16 touchbacks. Adam Finley had 1 kickoff for a 62 yard average.

Comments: Ross Mann earned the snapper duties, and he's done a nice job so far this year on snaps for punts, extra-points and field goals. We are the 11th least penalized team nationally, and 23rd in yards assessed with 45.6 yards per game.

Ross, Ryan 3 P 3 So. 6'0" 210 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Finley had a 43.0 yard average (18th in the nation) on 66 punts including two blocks, but our net punting was ranked 77th of 117 teams nationally. Our first blocked punt contributed to the loss to Notre Dame as we did with Iowa and Oregon last year; however, the Spartans were unable to capitalize on their block. Finley had a 68 yarder against MSU, and had 10 touchbacks, 13 punts downed inside the 20 yard line and 4 fair catches. The Buckeyes definitely exposed our weakness in net punting, and Ginn's return sealed our fate; it was a hard nail in our coffin.

Comments: Breaston had 24 returns for a 12.2 yard per return average (26th nationally); our team (Hall and Mason) had 31 returns for an 13.3 yard per return average (21st nationally) including 2 TDs by Hall and Breaston. We are dangerous here, but we also are dangerous to fumble. We made mistakes here every game. Curry, Avant, and Mundy are also capable returners.
