Perhaps Mike Zordich needs to find a new place to motivate players because our players simply aren't improving under his tutelage which includes negative motivational techniques; our players are not responding, and certainly not playing to their potential. As a unit, they are poor in coverage, and very bad in open field tackling.

Comments: Jake Moody had 89 kickoffs for a 58.1 yard average with 43 touchbacks with only one out of bounds; he set a school record and Freshman NCAA Record against Indiana as he hit 6 of 6 field goals replacing Nordin as starter, and finished with 10 of 11. Quinn Nordin hit on 11 of 16 field goals, and 44 of 45 extra points. Nordin on April 28 The 98 yard return by Ty Johnson of Maryland showed the kickoff team's weakness on the edge. Our kickoff return defense was ranked 5th in the conference and 19th nationally. I observed Ambry Thomas, Jake Moody, Josh Ross, Tru Wilson, Brad Hawkins, Tyree Kinnel, Ben St. Juste, Joe Hewlett, and J'Marick Woods on the kickoff team. The addition of Ben Mason to the unit paid BIG DIVIDENDS!!! Ryan Tice announced transfered to Eastern Michigan and Tennessee, but is on Central Michigan's 2018 Roster where he handled kickoffs for the Chippewas. Alan Selzer and Adam Culp are new walk-ons! Will we add Alex Bales?

Comments: Will Hart had 43 punts with 15 inside the 20 including 19 with for 50+ yards with 13 starts; he was recognized as the Big Ten 1st Team Punter. Our net punting took a nose dive after the blocked punt against the Buckeyes, and we ranked 7th in the conference and 64th nationally with our punt return defense ranked 11th in the conference and 87th nationally. Brad Robbins was injured; apparently he had surgery for a back injury. I was able to identify the following on the punt team: Ambry Thomas, Jake McCurry, and Brandon Watson were the flyers or gunners, and others on the punt coverage team included Will Hart, Cameron Cheeseman, Josh Ross, Tru Wilson, Noah Furbush, Hunter Reynolds, Devin Gil, Joe Hewlett, Khaleke Hudson, and Jordan Glasgow. Glasgow forced a fumble that Hewlett recovered against MSU. McCurry forced a fumble that Thomas recovered against Nebraska. New walk-on George Caratan did travel to South Bend; apparently, Nordin was Hart's backup. Will we add Mark Elzinga?

Comments on schedule:  After observing the team in 13 games, this is my assessment of the team: We were a much improved offensive football team over 2017. Our offense had a good running back, and the offensive line improved. Our rushing offense ranked 4th in the Big Ten Conference and 23rd nationally, our passing offense ranked 10th, and total offense ranked 5th. Our quarterback play was significantly improved over the past two seasons with Sean Patterson and Dylan McCaffrey way better than Wilton Speight and John O'Korn; Patterson is more mobile, and a better scrambler, and currently ranked as the second best quarterback in the conference. We ranked 1st in the conference in 3rd down conversions, and 6th in first downs; our red zone efficiency is 9th in the conference. We have good starting wide receivers with Donovan Peoples-Jones, Nico Collins and Grant Perry with solid pass catching Tight Ends with Zach Gentry, Sean McKeon and Nick Eubanks. Redshirt Oliver Martin, Freshman Ronnie Bell and Walk-on Jake McCurry rotated in at wide receiver to improve the depth, and the return of Tarik Black helped us down the stretch. Donovan Peoples-Jones is now our "go to" guy for 3rd and long; Collins is our deep-threat guy. The offense had few turnovers, and that is the mark of a good offense. We are too predictable offensively with too much emphasis on the run; when we are in obvious passing situations, our packages are too predictable for our opponents to defend just as the Buckeyes, Gators and Irish showed.

On defense, we had a strong, but inconsistent defense that was exposed by the strong offenses of Ohio State, Florida, and Notre Dame. We ranked #1 in the nation in total defense, and first in the conference in both pass defense and pass efficiency defense. Our backfield has been given a lot of national attention, but they were overrated. David Long, LaVert Hill, and Brandon Watson were good, but couldn't match the strong receiving corps of Notre Dame, Florida, or Ohio State. Our safety play continued to be a problem in coverage as Josh Metellus, Khaleke Hudson, and Tyree Kinnel were only mediocre at best. Our defense took ridiculous pass interference and holding calls when they struggle on "technique" in man coverage; Coach Brown didn't adjust enough to use zone when needed. We ranked 11th in the conference and 94th nationally of 130 Division I Team in fewest penalties. Our defense was good, but it cannot defeat opponents by itself, and it can't be a great defense until it improved in red zone effectiveness. Our red zone defense is ranked last in the conference and 127th nationally! A good defense does not give up big plays; in our three losses, it was notable that the defense was continually haunted by giving up big plays.

On Special Teams, Quinn Nordin, Jake Moody, and Will Hart did a fine job. It was a great decision by Harbaugh to replace him with Jake Moody as he hit 6 of 6 for a new school record against Indiana. We rank 5th in the conference and 23rd nationally in net punting, and 5th in the conference and 31st nationally in kickoff return defense. We have real threats in punt returns with Donovan Peoples-Jones, and our kickoff returns with Ambry Thomas and Ronnie Bell. We rank 7th and 4th in the conference in both kickoff and punt returns. Ben Mason really leads the kickoff team. Brandon Watson, Jake McCurry, and Thomas are our gunners for punt returns; so far, they have done an adequate job. Our units led by Joe Hewlett, Jordan Glasgow, J'Marick Woods, and Khaleke Hudson as punt blockers.
