Coach Harbaugh has utilized 3 different Offensive Coordinators while recruiting dozens of offensive linemen over 5 seasons; the offense he has built was simply mediocre this season. One wonders why a Senior Quarterback with a Senior Offensive Line weren't prepared enough to begin the season on a roll as veterans; instead, they began the season in an undisciplined manner with a high turnover rate. Our running game was POOR! We couldn't handle Wisconsin, Penn State, or Ohio State, and finished the season ranked 76th nationally and 8th in the Big Ten in rushing the football. Our offense couldn't control the ball when needed, and we had one of the worst time of possession statistics in the conference. We gained less than 100 yards rushing against Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State; and could only gain 108, 120, 141, and 155 against Army, Iowa, Rutgers, Penn State and Maryland. The accepted standard of a good rushing game is 200 yards per game, and both Wisconsin and Ohio State gained 359 and 264 yards on the ground against our good defense; this is where we need to be, and that means we are able to plough through good defenses. Our passing game was improved as we threw for over 300 yards in 4 games this season including the final 3 games; however, we continued to have a lot of dropped passes. We had a solid stable of receivers, but were not a good red zone team; we didn't find a "go-to" guy in critical offensive situations so the offense is struggled mentally as well as physically. Both Donovan Peoples-Jones and Ronnie Bell were our best hopes, but we came away with poor red zones performances against the best defenses. We only scored 10 points in 3 red zones with Iowa, 17 points in 3 red zones with Ohio State, and 14 points in 4 red zones against Wisconsin. Bell only scored one TD in 12 games, and DPJ scores 6 TDs. We ranked 9th in the conference in red zone offense, and 83rd nationally; Harbaugh and Gattis began to utilize Haskins in a "Wildcat" at the goal line late in the season to help remedy some of the poor red zone execution. Harbaugh said after the Iowa game that this offense is just "hitting their stride." The offense did not demonstrate that it could control the football when needed, and sustain long drives by playing consistently good offensive football; even in the Notre Dame game, the offense came out in the second half with three "3 and outs" to start the half. We ranked 68th nationally in total offense, and 7th in the conference; our scoring offense ranked 38th nationally and 5th in the conference. Harbaugh's offense isn't good enough to compete for a conference title, and we were only the 4th or 5th best team in the conference due to a mediocre offense. Our opponents and their coaching staffs could easily prepare to defense our personnel and offensive coaching schemes.

On defense, our 3-3-5 defensive scheme with undersized down linemen demonstrated that they cannot stop teams with strong running attacks; is is no accident that we are ranked 5th in the Big Ten in Rushing Defense. We were destroyed by both Ohio State and Wisconsin on the ground with 4 and 5 rushing TDs respectively. This defense did not force enough turnovers nor did it demonstrate that it ccould wreck opposing offenses by creating pressure and havoc. We ranked 4th in the Big Ten in sacks, and 8th in Tackles for Loss. Aidan Hutchinson, Kwity Paye, Mike Danna, and Carlo Kemp played solid football, and deserved post-season recognition; however, they were easily handled by the Wisconsin and Ohio State offensive lines. Although we have better statistics on pass defense; our coverage overall was poor, and we had to take a lot of penalties to avoid getting beat on deep routes. Penn State and Ohio State showed how weak this group is. Our pass defense was susceptible to being destroyed by a team with a solid passing attack; our defensive line has little "push" and penetration at the line of scrimmage in passing situations, and opposing quarterbacks were comfortable in the pocket waiting and watching their progressions as their receivers got open especially in short yardage as our linebackers had difficulty in coverage. Both Redshirt Freshman Cam McGrone and Frosh Daxton Hill's emergence really improved our defense, but our safeties and linebackers were unable to handle man coverage. Our defense overall was good, but it allowed Ohio State to score 56 points, and Wisconsin to score 35 points with 28 each by halftime with rushing attacks that we couldn't defend. Penn State scored 28 points including 21 by halftime with a passing attack we couldn't defend. If we are to defeat the most competitive teams, we have to improve defensively, and gain better personnel especially at safety, but also a priority must be bigger, faster and more powerful defensive linemen. Without Don Brown and this defense, this squad would have lost to Army and Iowa, and finished the season, 7-5.

Zach Charbonnet ran for 726 yards on 149 carries for 11 TDs, and caught 8 passes for 30 yards; he had his first turnover against Illinois on a fumble, and he was our leading offensive scorer with 66 points. Zach Charbonnet on September 9. Tru Wilson gained 221 yards in 44 carries for a TD; he missed the Army game due to a broken hand, and played in 11 games. Ben Mason and Tru Wilson on April 5 Tru Wilson Christian Turner is now 4th string; he ran 44 times for 171 yards plus a TD, and caught 4 passes for 13 yards. Turner fumbled against Iowa, and again against Illinois, but was ruled down before the turnover. Turner missed the Bowl game due to injury. Nick Capatina played on special teams in the Middle Tennessee game and Notre Dame games, and got his first carries against Rutgers; two for a net of one yard. Pete Bush saw action on special teams in 13 games, and recorded his first tackle against Illinois. Matt Brown may have traveled to Maryland; he was on the player participation, but that could have been another error from UofM Sports Information. Lucas Andrighetto stood out in the Spring, but tore his ACL and had surgery; he came back to play on special teams in the Citrus Bowl. Walk-ons Jared Char, Danny Hughes, Jordan Castleberry, Leon Franklin, and Abraham Jafaar did not seen action. Ricardo Macon was going to walk-on, but McElwain offered him a full-ride scholarship at CMU so he decommitted on April 30. Macon announced for the transfer portal December 28, 2019. Offense improved, but wasn't formable enough; the running game was not strong enough despite the mostly Senior offensive line with Runyan, Onwenu, Ruiz and Bredeson. Our passing game had outstanding receivers, but couldn't convert red zones opportunities. The top offenses in NCAA Football (LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Alabama, etc.) feature strong running attacks with dual-threat quarterbacks who force good defenses into mismatches; they are well-disciplined, and have few turnovers. This is why they will contend for conference titles, and have a shot to make the NCAA Playoff. Michigan had enough talent, but did not play up to their potential offensively. Is this an indictment on the coaching staff?

Coach Brown really did a tremendous job with the defense! He emphasized speed and quickness, and made the most of the talent he had. We have a history of not recruiting big linemen; the top football programs in college football recruit big, quick, fast, powerful, explosive yet mobile defensive linemen, and prioritize this position for the point of attack. Our linebackers have been pretty good in filling the gaps especially with the emergence of Cam McGrone; Jordan Glasgow has been solid against the run; however, they didn't get the job done against Ohio State, Wisconsin or Alabama. We had a mediocre defensive line, but was better in pressure for passing situations against most teams on our schedule. We ranked 5th in our conference and 23rd in the nation in rushing defense, and 4th in the conference in sacks and 14th nationally along with 8th in the conference in tackles for loss and 55th nationally. Good offenses know they can run on us, and they also recognize after watching game films to prepare for us that the short passing game works because our linebackers have difficulty covering in man coverage. We have yet to show we can stop a good dual threat quarterback.

Our defensive line improved tremendously with Hutchinson and Paye leading the group, and Danna also stepping up; Kemp is having a steady season. We need to start gaining defensive linemen who are explosive and large as well as quick and fast; perhaps, Hinton and Smith will develop, but it doesn't look like that will happen in 2019.

We have had good linebacker play overall with Jordan Glasgow, Cameron McGrone, and Josh Uche leading the group; Uche has alternated betweeen End and Linebacker. Our linebackers have difficulty in coverage especially with crossing patterns. Our linebackers didn't fill the gaps against Ohio State, and spent most of the day blocked out of plays.

Our defensive backs were burned for long plays and TD passes against Penn State, Ohio State, and Alabama; they have difficulty covering effectively in man. Metellus, Hawkins, and Hudson were all burned for TDs against Penn State, and Thomas gave up a big play that set up a red zone TD. Metellus was torched for several scores against Ohio State. Hawkins was unable to play the final 3 games due to injury.

Our special teams play overall didn't get the job done against Ohio State; they played poorly against the top teams on our schedule when we needed them to be at their best. The biggest plays of the year so far were Jordan Glasgow and Khaleke Hudson's punt blocks along with Giles Jackson's kickoff return TD; we were very fortunate to recover a fumble against Notre Dame after we had a punt blocked. We also took some bad penalties that negated good returns.

Comments: Quinn Nordin regained the starting field goal kicker position after returning from injury with 10 of 13 field goals including a Wolverine record tying 57 yarder in the Citrus Bowl, and 28 of 29 in PATs. Nordin on April 28 Jake Moody hit 6 of 9 field goal attempts plus 18 extra points; he kicked off 75 times for a 56.2 yard average with 34 touchbacks in 13 starts. Our kickoff return defense is ranked 106th nationally and 14th in the conference due to the TD return allowed against Maryland; otherwise, it has been pretty solid. Karl Kerska was a 2019 walk-on; Alan Selzer walked on in 2018, and got an extra point against Rutgers plus had a 64 yard kickoff! Will we add Cole Hussung for 2020?

Comments: Cameron Cheeseman started all 13 games; overall, he did a good job, but he had a poor snap against Iowa on a punt that hit the ground, and a high snap that led to a punt block against Notre Dame plus another high snap on an extra point. Trey Harper transferred from Duquesne; he tripped to Penn State, but didn't play this season. Matt Baldeck is also available. William Wagner has walked-on for 2019, and Hunter Neff may also compete at Long Snapper. Gregory Tarr has pledged for 2020!

Gerkis, Izaak 36 P 2 Fr. 5'9" 190 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Will Hart punted 51 times for a 44.24 yard average with 11 downed inside the 20 yard line in 13 starts; our net punting was very mediocre due to a combination of poor punting and poor coverage by our flyers. Will Hart on August 27 Brad Robbins was not on the roster until the Ohio State game; he punted 4 times for a 42.8 yard average with one downed inside the 20, and one blocked. George Caratan and Izaak Gerkis are walk-ons; Caratan entered the transfer portal on December 1 with Robbiins returning to the team. Gemon Green and Tyler Cochran are Gunners along with Louis Grodman, Cam McGrone, Adam Shibley, and Adam Fakih; Hassan Haskins and Daxton Hill were gunners until they gained starting positions. We are ranked 40th nationally in net punting and 5th in the conference; Hart led the conference in punt yard average, but the net punting was only mediocre. Michigan offered Austin McCready for 2020.

Comments: Donovan Peoples-Jones had 24 returns for 173 yards; he fumbled against Iowa after a 36 yard return, but Gemon Green saved his behind with a recovery. He fumbled against MSU after a 50 yard return for a turnover. Ronnie Bell replaced LaVert Hill after his fumble; Bell returned 8 punts for 67 yards incuding a 27 yarder, fumbled against Army with Josh Metellus saving the day with a recovery. LaVert Hill returned 3 for -1 yard, and also fumbled for a turnover. Mike Sainristil had one punt return for zero yards plus a fumble that he recovered. 37 returns for 291 yards is 7.9 yards per return. We ranked 67th in the nation and 7th in the conference in punt returns with three fumbles, and one turnover. We took some bad penalties that negated returns this season including Gemon Green in the Ohio State game.
