Schedule and Future Schedules

Fielding Yost arrived in Ann Arbor Spring, 1901; his "Point-a-Minute" teams powered to a 56 game winning streak, 1901-1905 outscoring opponents 2,821 to 42 in that stretch with 51 shutouts. Yost began coaching in 1897 at Ohio Wesleyan after playing at West Virginia and Lafayette, 1894-1896; his Battling Bishops shut out both Michigan and Ohio State as he finished 7-1-1. He then coached at Nebraska, Kansas, and Stanford with records of 8-3, 10-0, and 7-2-1 over the next three seasons accumulating 23 shut out wins over four seasons. Yost's initial salary at Michigan was $2,300 which was about the same amount of money that a full professor at the University of Michigan made. The Wolverines became the first National Champion that was from "West" in 1901 as all the first recognized titlists, 1869-1900, were Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Penn, Lafayette, Columbia or Rutgers.

What is the matter with our offense? First, we are a poor time of possession team, and are not making enough first downs and/or 3rd down conversions; we rank 57th nationally and 8th in the conference in first downs, 50th nationally and 10th in the Big Ten in time of possession, and our 3rd down conversion rate is 16th nationally and 6th in the Big Ten. What does that spell? Poor Offensive Execution On the bright side, we have been pretty good at running the ball, and have not let up many sacks; we have also been decent at limiting turnovers until recently. We are one of the poorest teams nationally in passing ranking 99th nationally and 14th in the Big Ten, and our pass efficiency isn't much better ranking 71st nationally and 11th in the conference. Ohio State's defense is ranked 4th and 2nd nationally and 2nd in the Big Ten in 3rd down conversions and first downs allowed; their red zone defense is ranked 1st nationally allowing only 19 red zone trips in 11 games with 12 scores including 11 TDs. We will definitely be outmanned against #1 Ohio State; our only hope is to win the turnover battle to keep the game close. The Big Ten Championships game will be Indiana vs. Ohio State, and there is a very good chance that both teams will be undefeated when they meet.

Most people characterize Fielding Yost as an offensive coach; few people realize that his teams suffocated opponents into 142 shutouts in his 198 wins over 29 seasons.

Our defense has been pretty good against the run except against USC; conversely, we have been poor in pass coverage all season long. We rank 52nd nationally and 11th in the Big Ten against the pass. Yes, we do put good pressure on opposing quarterbacks, but we haven't been an effective defense on 3rd down nor in the red zone. Ohio State ranks 26th nationally and 2nd in the Big Ten in passing offense, and their quarterback, Julian Sayin, is the most accurate passer nationally with a 79.4% completion rate and 27 TDs ranking him 4th nationally. Jeremiah Smith has 69 receptions and 10 TDs; he has more TD receptions than the entire Michigan receiving corps combined. Neither Jyaire Hill nor Zeke Berry stand much of a chance against him. Ohio State has converted 55.8% of their 3rd down conversions ranking 2nd nationally, and is ranked 20th nationally and 3rd in the Big Ten in first downs; they ranked 6th nationally and 2nd in the Big Ten in time of possession. We will need turnovers to beat the Buckeyes in 2025, and Ohio State only has 7 turnovers so far in 11 games ranking 4th in the Big Ten.

Our defensive backfield is weak on coverage as shown by Oklahoma and USC; teams will continue to attack us in the air with screens and short passes to expose our poor cover skils at safety, defensive backs and linebackers.

Overall, the Defensive Backfield has been a real disappointment. Our safeties can be beat deep as Oklahoma showed; our corners are good against the run, but poor in coverage.
