Our offense is one of the worst nationally; we rank 128th in Total Offense, 127th in Passing Offense, and 107th in Scoring Offense out of 134 Division I Football Teams; we rank 10th in the Big Ten in 3rd down conversions, and 16th in First Downs. Our red zone offense and rushing offense has been decent, but we must increase our playmakers on offense and better utilize those playmakers if we are to become a factor in the Big Ten in 2025.

44 players have played on defense

Donald "Wink" Martindale is the new Defensive Coordinator; he has done a poor job with a -74 in the UFR RPS, and our defense is still not ready for "up tempo" offenses. Our 3rd down conversion stops are ranked 13th in the conference and 97th nationally.

The weakest part of our defense is our linebacking; our tackling is far from solid, and they are also weak in coverage. Our linebackers do not fill gaps as needed. It is easy to see why our opponents use draw plays, and short passes since we are such a poor tackling team in space. We also lack depth.

Overall, this group has been good in coverage with cornerbacks, Johnson, Hall, and Hill; however, we are weak in coverage at Safety and Nickel. The whole group had a bad game against Washington with no pass break ups, and two TDs thrown on them. They have been good overall in run support especially Captain Paige; however, they miss a lot of open field tackles.

Our pass defense is pathetic; what a difference between last season and this season. Steven Clinksdale would not allow such poor coverage. Lamar Morgan has not done a good job coaching this group, and it shows on game day.

CommentsTommy Doman has 49 punts for a 42.61 yard average with 15 downed inside the 20, and 22 fair catches. Doman entered the transfer portal on December 7. Our punt return coverage really tanked in the second half against Minnesota allowing two returns of 20+ and 60 yards, and the fake punt conversion by Illinois completely fooled us; we were not prepared for that, and it cost us that game. Doman's 35 yard punt late in the 4th quarter, and a 22 yard return setting the Hoosiers up at our 39 yard line cost us that game, too.
