Observations on the win over Purdue, 44-13
Michigan converteds 6 red zones into 30 points plus 7 points off 4 Purdue turnovers. Purdue turns two red zones into 10 points, and also scored 7 off a Michigan turnover.
Denard Robinson gained 235 yards on 24 rushes, and was 8 of 16 in passing for 105 yards and a TD. Offense had 409 net yards with 304 on the ground, and 19 first downs. We dominated time of possession by 12 minutes giving us 9 additional offensive plays, and were 11 of 18 in 3rd and 4th down conversions. Fitzgerald Touissaint had 17 carries for only 19 yards, but 2 TDs while running mostly East and West rather than North and South. Jeremy Gallon had 3 catches for 37 yards, and 3 runs for 13 yards. Devin Gardner had 2 catches for 31 yards, and a TD. Roy Roundtree had 2 catches for 23 yards, and Devin Funchess caught a 14 yarder setting up a TD. Thomas Rawls had 4 carries for 33 yards and his first Wolverine TD.
Defense was led by Kenny Demens, Jake Ryan and Desmond Morgan with 6 tackles each. Ramon Taylor scampered for a 63 yard TD on the interception, and Thomas Gordon snatched a 19 yard interception. Defense forced the Boilermakers into 5 three and outs, and a 4th down stop. Purdue had only 213 net offensive yards and 15 first downs with only 56 on the ground. Purdue was only 2 of 14 in 3rd and 4th down conversions. Defense created 2 sacks and 3 pass break ups. We forced Purdue into 5 punts, 4 turnovers, 2 field goals and a 4th down stop in 14 possessions with only giving them one TD just before the half.
Brendon Gibbons hit 3 of 4 field goal attempts. Will Hagerup boomed a 57 yard punt. Drew Dileo had a nice 10 yard punt return. Matt Wile had 9 kickoffs with only one touchback. Dennis Norfleet had 76 yards in 3 kickoff returns, and Delonte Hollowell recovered the kickoff return fumble. Jarrod Wilson had 2 tackles on special teams, and a fumble recovery at the end of the game.
Michigan should coast over Illinois, and be ready to entertain the Spartans, 2-0 in the Big Ten and 4-2 overall. Go Blue!!!
