Observations on the win over
the Badgers, 27-13!
1-We completely dominated the second
half limiting Wisconsin to no first downs in the 3rd quarter,
and six "3 and outs" to start the second half. We wanted
it more, and it showed! They won the turnover battle by creating
3 to one, and scoring 7 points to 3 on points off turnover; however,
we created 4 red zones for 13 points to Wisconsin's one red zone
for 3 points.
2-Henne was sacked twice, and threw
3 picks; however, he ended the game with 18 of 25 for 211 yards
and 2 TDs to Manningham. Our offense improved in the second half
as the Wisconsin defense wore down. Offense netted 16 first downs,
322 net yards in 64 offensive plays; however was only two of 14
in 3rd and 4th down conversions. Not a great offensive performance,
but enough to get the job done with our stout defense.
3-Hart was held to 21 carries for
91 yards and one TD. Offense netted 111 rushing yards. Arrington
had 4 catches for 79 yards, but Manningham had 7 catches for 113
yards and two TDs, 38 and 33 yarders. Our offense was forced into
6 punts and three turnovers by a tough Badger defense. Stellmacher
led the Badgers with 10 tackles, Casillas and Zalewski had 8 each.
4-Our defense simply won the game.
Stocco was 22 of 42 for 236 yards, 1 TD and 4 sacks. Defense had
10 tackles for loss. Their offense had 14 first downs, and was
4 of 19 in 3rd down conversions. They had 70 plays for 248 net
yards. P.J. had 20 carries for 54 yards and 5 catches for 64 yards
including the 29 yard TD; however, Harris blanketed him in the
second half. Harris led the defense with 10 tackles. Prescott
Burgess had seven tackles, and sacks were turned in by Woodley,
Branch, Jamison and Johnson. We forced them into 11 punts.
5-Our special teams created a turnover
on a great 56 yard punt by Mesko, tackle and forced fumble by
Hood and recovery by Booth, the snapper. Rivas hit his two field
goal. Breaston had 9 punt returns for 116 yards, and kept us in
great field position most of the day. Ryan had two touchbacks
on six kickoffs, and great kickoff return coverage by Sears, Brown
and Savoy. Sears got a 17 yard kickoff return. Both teams have
played great on special teams, but our team held an advantage
due to the turnover and field position advantage. DeBauche walloped
11 punts for a 46.7 yard average; that was quite an effort. Mesko
punted 3 times as did Ryan, but the 17 yarder in the second half
by Ryan was pathetic.
6-It was nice to see Barringer back
playing in the backfield. Mike Knill, a walk-on, saw action on
the D-line. Morgan Trent started his 3rd game in a row over Stewart
and Harrison.
7-Minnesota is never easy for the
Brown Jug especially not easy in Minneapolis; however, Purdue
beat them today. It looks like MSU for the Paul Bunyan trophy
in Ann Arbor on October 7 as a huge weekend for our program in
recruiting as well as the title race. Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan,
Michigan State and Purdue look to be this year's contenders for
the Big Ten title.
Observations on the first half
with Wisconsin, 10-10!
1-The Badgers have come to play,
and are outplaying us. They have won the turnover battle so far
scoring 7 points to 3 as each team has one turnover. The Badger
defense has outplayed our defense stopping two red zones for 3
points while our defense hasn't allowed the Badgers into our red
zone.
2-Henne has been sacked twice, and
is 10 of 13 for 97 yards, one pick and one TD. Our offense has
only managed 7 first downs and is zero of 8 3rd and 4th down conversions.
Hart has been held to 13 carries for 49 yards. Arrington has 3
catches for 59 yards. Manningham has 3 catches for 39 yards and
one TD. Our offense has been forced into 4 punts and one turnover
by a tough Badger defense, and has netted only 149 yards in 32
plays. Casillas and Levy have the two sacks, and one was over
Riley.
3-Our special teams created a turnover
on a great 56 yard punt by Mesko, tackle by Hood and recovery
by Booth, the snapper. Rivas hit his field goal. Breaston has
4 punt returns for 37 yards. Ryan has one touchback in two kickoffs.
Sears got a 17 yard kickoff return. Both teams have played great
on special teams, and neither team has any big advantage through
penalties.
4-Stocco is 10 of 17 for 127 yards,
1 TD and 2 sacks. Their offense has 8 first downs, and is 2 of
8 in 3rd down conversions. They have 33 plays for 135 yards. P.J.
Hill is indeed a player, and has 12 carries for 37 yards and 3
catches for 52 yards including the 29 yard TD. Hill had made Harris
look bad. Morgan Trent, David Harris and Prescott Burgess lead
our defense with 5 tackles each. Woodley and Burgess have sacks,
Burgess and Hall have pass deflections. We have forced them into
5 punts. Stellmacher and Casillas have 5 tackles each for the
Badgers. Langford got the pick on Henne.
5-If we are to win, we'll have to
play mistake free and capitalize on Badger mistakes hopefully
forced by our defense. We will also have to discover a way to
move the ball on this determined Badger defense. Time of possession
will be an important factor as we only have a one minute 45 second
advantage. We have 52 yards in net rushing compared to their 8
yards, we definitely need to control the net rushing advantage.
