Observations on the first half with Connecticut, 7-14
Michigan converts one red zone for 7 points, but the Huskies storm back with two red zone conversions late in the 2nd quarter to gain 14 points and the halftime lead.
Offense was putrid. Devin Gardner turned the ball over twice on interceptions; he was 6 of 14 for 51 yards, and ran 11 times for 28 yards. Gardner was sacked 3 times. Offense put up 115 total yards, and was 3 of 8 in 3rd down conversions with 9 first downs.. They lost their poise, and now the Huskies have all the momentum. Fitz Touissaint has 10 carries for 37 yards. We let a 4 minute time of possession advantage go for naught when we didn't score more points early.
Defense started well, and held the Huskies to four "3 and outs." Connecticut ended the first half with 128 net yards, 6 first downs, and was 1 of 7 in 3rd down conversions. Geremy Davis has 3 catches for 36 yards, and Lyle McCombs has 5 carries for 29 yards, but grabbed two passes for 5 yards including a TD that gave the Huskies the lead. Frank Clark, Desmond Morgan, Joe Bolden, and Jarrod Wilson lead the defense with 3 tackles each; Clark has a sack.
Freshman Demario Jones doesn't watch the ball on the punt return, it hits him resulting in a red zone turnover, and 7 points. Wile has been mediocre on 4 punts including a 20 yarder. Special teams have not been doing their part.
Second Half will be a nailbiter thanks to poor leadership and toughness on this year's Wolverine squad. Hope Brady Hoke and Staff can "coach them up" at halftime.
