Conclusions:

1--We've played some pretty tough competition, and had to deal with some outstanding offensive teams and players!

2--57% of the offensive plays have resulted in a zero to 5 yard gain and 66% of the offensive plays have resulted in negative to very minimal positive yardage (5 yards or less) gains.

3--In all three losses, our offense could have put the games away, but failed. In other words, in our three losses, the defense played well enough for us to win, but the offense let us down.

4--In our four losses, the offensive big plays that really hurt us were:

a)Gary Russell's 61 yard run at the end of the 4th quarter that led to the winning field goal when we were "loafin."

b)Ernie Wheelright's 20 yard TD pass from Cupito just before halftime moving a potential 13-3 or 13-6 halftime advantage to 13-10.

c)Jeff Samardzija's 26 yard TD pass from Quinn to start the scoring that led to a 14-3 halftime advantage.

d)Santonio Holmes 26 yard TD pass from Smith in the 4th quarter with 6:?? to go to put the Buckeyes within range to win the game.

5--Our offense has created too many big plays for opposing teams putting our defense in a "hole" and not executing red zone opportunities; examples are:

a)Peko's 74 yard TD run after Henne's fumble.

b)Zemaitis' 35 yard TD run after Henne's fumble.

c)Henne's second half interception against Minnesota that led to a game tying field goal at the beginning of the second half, 13-13. Rivas missed two field goals of 34 and 42 yards with the game tied at 20.

d)Max Martin's fumble in the 4th quarter while leading 13-9 giving the Badgers a red zone opportunity at the 12 with 10 minutes to go in the game, and after regaining the lead at 20-16, the offense's inability to possess the ball and run out the clock. Zero red zone opportunities in the second half.

e)Notre Dame: 3 red zones, 2 fumbles and an interception (Zbikowski's 27 yard return), zero points

6--5 of 28 20+ yard plays have gone for TDs, 2 defensive and one special teams.

7--We couldn't finish defensively in our 4 losses: Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ohio State scored late to win 3 of the 4 games, blame the Notre Dame loss strictly on our offense although our lack of offense certainly contributed in the other three losses.

Our pass defense was #4 in the Big Ten and #51 nationally allowed 14touchdowns and 211.55 yards per game, and our pass efficiency defense was #3 in the Big Ten and #38 nationally. Michigan was also #3 in the Big Ten and #31 nationally in turnover margin including #23 nationally in fumble recoveries. Total Defense was ranked 38th nationally, and 3rd in the Big Ten allowing 347.64 yards per game and surrendering 19 TDs. Our scoring defense ranked 22nd nationally which ranks us 4th in the Big Ten.

Coach Jim Herrmann and defensive backs coach, Ron English, have done a magnificent job getting the most out of the talent the players possess. Don't blame the defensive backfield for giving up 300 yards against Ohio State; no pash rush and no containment of Smith was the problem. Our backs can't cover forever back there. Defensive line coach, Steve Stripling, has some work to do, but improvement has been there.
