Stock Up(32)/Stock Down(12)/Time Will Tell(22)/Factor for 2010(18): 84 Players

Following Spring Practices in 2009

Stock Up: 32 players

Team Leaders

Brandon Graham: The probable Captain and Leader of the Defense in his 3rd year as starter, and top NFL prospect after winning the Dan Dierdorf Award and on the Lott, Nagurski, Lombardi, Hendricks, Bednarik and Outland Watch Lists.

Brandon Minor: He will probably be our Senior Captain on Offense. As we saw in the 2008 season, he is one tough customer who is an NFL caliber player.

Stevie Brown: The winner of the Meyer Morton Award, and starter for the new Hybrid Safety/Linebacker position as we transition from 4-3 to 3-4 defense.

Quarterback

Tate Forcier: The possible starter after enrolling in January, and working with the first unit due to a knee injury to Nick Sheridan and transfer of Steven Threet.

Defensive Line

Mike Martin: The winner of the Iron Wolverine Award as best conditioned linemen on either side of the ball; he solidified his starting position as #1 defensive tackle. Martin, Graham and VanBergen will anchor the defensive line in 2009.

Ryan VanBergen: Co-winner of the Sophomore Award and last year's winner of the John Maulbetsch Award that solidified his starting position at Strong Side Defensive End that really moved to a Defensive Tackle position in some schemes. He will give us solid, consistent play in 2009.

Will Campbell: Another January enrollee who will see significant playing time in the 2009 season. He will continue to work on conditioning and learn the Robinson and Tall Defensive schemes throughout the Spring and Summer to be ready.

Running Back

Carlos Brown: In his senior year, and fast andexplosive as the leading rusher in Spring practices; barring injuries, he is expected to be a big contributor in 2009.

Vincent Smith: At 5'6" 158 lbs. he runs low and has great manueverability and balance; he will be a factor in 2009.

Smith has "eye-popping" performances in Spring Drills

Wolverines look "Deepest" at Running Back

Mike Cox: The winner of the Iron Wolverine Award for his position group that incorporated running backs, defensive backs and other skill positions. A very good back with a very good future after redshirting in 2008.

Kevin Grady: At 5'9" 226 lbs., he is a solid, battering Ram who will get us tough yards in tough situations, but is a threat to break big plays and has the speed to go the distance.

Mark Moundros: A very solid, underrated player who is known for his blocking ability; however, he is a threat in passing situations and can get tough yards when needed.

Jim Potemba: Wow, this guy is really good and really underrated just because he is a walk-on. He can run, catch and block well. He is really a good player.

Offensive Line

Steve Schilling: He moved from Right Tackle to Left Guard successfully, and is our top offensive lineman; he won the Hugh Rader Award in 2008.

Mark Ortmann: The winner of the Fred Matthaei Award, and solidified his starting Left Tackle position on offense.

Mark Huyge: The apparent winner of the starting Right Tackle position beating out Patrick Omameh and Dann O'Neill.

David Moosman: He solidified his position as a starter at Right Guard in the Spring. Moosman won the Dierdorf Award for the 2008 Spring practices.

Patrick Omameh: The co-winner of the John Maulbetsch Award, and current first backup to Ortmann and Huyge after redshirting in 2008.

David Molk: He solidified his starting position at Center by beating out Khoury and McAvoy, and was the Co-Winner of the Sophomore Award.

Defensive Backfield

Troy Wolfolk: He moved from cornerback to claim the Free Safety starting position over Michael Williams this Spring. He is fast and steady, and will give us solid play in 2009.

Boubacar Cissoko: He solidified a starting position for the 2009 campaign after becoming a starter as a true Freshman late in 2008.

J.T. Floyd: The co-winner of the John Maulbetsch Award, and current first backup to Warren and Cissoko after redshirting in 2008.

Vladimir Emilien: A possible starter after enrolling in January, and recovering from a torn ACL in the Fall, 2008. He has shown quickness, speed, agility and is a good tackler.

Linebackers

Brandon Herron: The winner of the Iron Wolverine Award for his position group that incorporates Linebackers, Tight Ends, Fullbacks, etc.; he is very fast, mobile with great endurance to rush the quarterbacks and cover receivers.

J.B. Fitzgerald: A very good inside linebacker that may have beaten out incumbent Ezeh for the starting position at MIKE.

Steve Watson: A real surprise after moving over from Tight End, he is tough and has adapted to a defensive end position that has to play as a linebacker in some schemes. He will be a solid defensive player for the 2009 season.

Will Heinager: A walk-on who is very tough, and will backup Ryan VanBergen. He is a very solid player at 6'6" 251 lbs.

Brandin Hawthorne: A January enrollee that is backing up Stevie Brown at the Hybrid Safety/Outside Linebacker position. He is fearless with great instincts, presence and an ability to tackle in the open field.

Mike Jones: A January enrollee that is backing up Stevie Brown at the Hybrid Safety/Outside Linebacker position. He is a solid tackler, and will probably contribute as a true Freshman.

Wide Receivers

Roy Roundtree: He caught two TDs in the Spring Practice at the Big House, and has the ability to get open. He should contribute throughout the 2009 season. Roy Roundtree eyes Starting Line-Up

Martavious Odoms: Tae continues to impress while solidifying his starting position as Slot Wide Receiver in the Rodriquez offense.

Greg Mathews: Senior leadership is needed on offense, and Mathews is willing to provide it in 2009; he solidified his starting position during the Spring beating out Hemingway, Rogers and Savoy. Mathews is a former Maulbetsch winner.

Stock Down: 12 players

Note: Stock Down doesn't mean this players won't be factors on the depth chart nor that they won't earn playing time.

Offensive Line

Dann O'Neill: Big Dann is working behind Huyge, Dorenstein and Omameh at Right Tackle. He still needs to mature, improve and perfect his speed, quickness and blocking skills to be a factor in the depth chart.

John Ferrara: He looks destined for a backup role at Right Guard in 2009 behind Moosman after starting several games in 2008. He could also move to defensive line if we have injuries.

Tim McAvoy: He was starter at Left Guard in 2008, and unseated by Ortmann, then Ferrara for playing time. Now, he is backing up Center, but is behind Khoury. He is a Senior in 2009 and we need his leadership.

Quarterback

David Cone: He was outplayed by walk-on, Jack Kennedy, in the Spring Practice at the Big House and couldn't hit many open receivers. He did break a big run, and has been working with a hand injury to his non-throwing hand.

Receiver

James Rogers: After watching the "1"s and "2"s perform on offense at wide receiver, Rogers worked with the other walk-on receivers, and didn't stand out with the "3"s and "4"s.

Brandon Moore: We didn't see him participate in the Spring Practice at the Big House; he must have been injured. Reports were he was having a good Spring, but he is still behind Kevin Koger and Martell Webb for playing time.

LaTerryal Savoy: Another Senior who appears destined for a backup role behind Mathews, Stonum, Hemingway and Roundtree. With new Freshman receivers like Stokes, Gordon and Gallon coming in, he will have to step up his game to see action in 2009.

Linebacker

Obi Ezeh: Even though he won the Roger Zatkoff Award in 2008, it looks like he'll play a backup role in 2009 rather than a starting role at linebacker. He did not show solid tackling and gap filling at MIKE in 2008. Coach Robinson has already told the defense that tackling will be emphasized in Summer drills.

Marell Evans: He seems to have fallen from earning the starting postion in the Utah game at SAM-OLB to a backup at ILB-MIKE or ILB-WILL, and he's behind Fitzgerald, Ezeh, Demens, Herron and even newcomers Hawthorne and Jones.

Defensive Line

Greg Banks: He is backing up VanBergen at Strong Side Defensive End which goes down to Defensive Tackle in some schemes. At 275 lbs. he is more of a defensive tackle than and is behind walk-ons Heinager and North for playing time at Strong Side Defensive End. He could be a factor inside backing up Martin, Campbell, Helmuth, Sagesse and other defensive tackles.

Adam Patterson: He is backing up Campbell at Defensive Tackle in some schemes, and VanBergen at Strong Side Defensive Tackle in others. At 263 lbs. he is more of a defensive tackle. After a medical redshirt in 2008, he isn't a factor at defensive end, but will compete for playing time as a down linemen.

Special Teams

Bryan Wright: Although he's been injured, he has been beaten out by walk-on Jason Olesnavage in the Spring for lead placekicker so this opens the door for Brendon Gibbons this Summer.

Time Will Tell: Injuries/Summer Conditioning/Learning the System: 22 players

Quarterback

Denard Robinson: He came to the Spring Practice at the Big House on April 11 as an observer, and apparently the coaches are calling him regularly and telling him he has a chance to start in 2009.

Denard Robinson arrives June 5

Even with Denard still in High School, Quarterback Competition is "Heating Up"

Nick Sheridan: His knee injury didn't require surgery, and the hope is he'll be 100% for Summer drills. If so, he may be the starter for the Western Michigan game as he was ahead of Forcier before the injury.

Running Back

Michael Shaw: He is coming off a sports hernia injury, and has significant competition at running back with Minor, Brown, Grady, Smith, Cox and Potemba ahead of him on the depth chart after Spring drills. Of course, we must remember that Shaw was our backup running back behind Minor most of the 2008 campaign.

Wide Receiver

Jeremy Gallon: If he earns a qualifying score on ACT this Spring and is eligible for practices in June, he has the talent to play Slot immediately and be a factor on punt and kickoff returns. His performance in the Under Armour High School All American Game was also impressive.

Je'Ron Stokes: He has a great chance for playing time at inside or outside wide receiver, and may be a factor on special teams as a punt and kickoff returner as well as the three wide receiver positions, X, Y and Z.

Kevin Koger: A starter as a true Freshman in 2008, he needs to be a productive Tight End counted on to catch several passes in every game in 2009. He has huge hands, quickness and speed; now, he needs to prove he is a "go to guy."

Justin Feagin: He was out due to "mono" and couldn't finish Spring drills; however, he will be a factor at Slot and Quarterback and is a great athlete.

Terrence Robinson: He hasn't fully recovered from a knee injury, and wasn't quite as impressive working with Cone's "2" group in the Spring Practice at the Big House. He and Feagin will probably back up Odoms at the Slot.

Offensive Line

Ricky Barnum: He missed a lot of Spring drills due to ankle and wrist injuries, but hopefully will back up both guard positions for Moosman and Schilling in 2009. If strong at guard, it affords us to move Moosman to Center if Molk gets injured. He is most likely our offensive line's "6th man."

Perry Dorenstein: He is backing up both tackle positions and is behind Huyge and Ortmann battling with Omameh for the first backup. He did well starting a few games in 2008.

Linebacker

Craig Roh: He has a great chance to move into the 3-4 defense as a defensive end/linebcacker on the weak side backing up Graham and Watson. He has demonstrated in the Under Armour High School All American Game that he is a great pass rusher.

Isaiah Bell: He is perfect for thy Hybrid Safety/SAM-OLB position and will compete with Stevie Brown, Brandin Hawthorne and Mike Jones for playing time; Summer drills will be a key for him learning the position.

Kenny Demens: He has also been battling injuries in Spring drills, but may be backing up Mouton and Fitzgerald at ILB-WILL and ILB-MIKE.

Jonas Mouton: After coming off shoulder surgery, the hope is he'll return to 100% and the starting ILB-WILL position in 2009. He was probably our best linebacker in 2008.

Brandon Smith: He earned the starting position at Strong Safety, but is rumored to be moving to the new Hybrid Safety/Linebacker position or ILB-WILL because he may lack the speed to roam in open field. Carlos Brown ran past him for the 82 yard TD in the Spring Practice at the Big House

Defensive Backfield

J.T. Turner: After watching his performance in the Under Armour High School All American Game, he will be a factor in 2009 and rotate in the defensive backfield as a starter, Nickel or backup at corner and/or safety.

Donovan Warren: He had ankle surgery and couldn't fully participate in Spring drills, and hopefully will be ready for a leadership role on defense in 2009.

Michael Williams: He is our first backup at both safety positions, and if Brandon Smith moved to linebacker, he'll have a chance to start at Strong Safety. He is solid in run support, and can blitz, but will need to be better in open field tackling situations in 2009.

Thomas Gordon: He will be working this Summer as a Free Safety and Nickel with Troy Wolfolk, Michael Williams, J.T. Floyd and J.T. Turner as competitors for playing time.

Defensive Line

Vince Helmuth: He was called out by Coach Rod at a press conference for reporting to Spring drills overweight and listed at 299 lbs. after playing at 252 lbs. at fullback in previous season.

Renaldo "Ray Ray" Sagesse: He will be backing up Mike Martin and Will Campbell at Nose Tackle; he is strong, but not very fast so hopefully he'll get in better shape for 2009.

Special Teams

Brendon Gibbons: He has a great chance to come in an win the starting plackekicker and/or kickoff assignments and unseat Olesnavage as the starter.

Key Players for Special Team Success

Zoltan Mesko: A good chance he'll be an NFL punter so in his Senior year, he needs to make a case to support his candidacy for the NFL.

Zach Johnson: He had an outstanding 2008 campaign, and we need him to be even better in 2009.

Tom Pomarico and/or George Morales: Whoever wins the snapper job will need to have a solid 2009 season for our placekicking and punts.

Kevin Leach: Solid special Teams player in 2008, and great linebacker.

Tim North: Solid special Teams player in 2008, and great defensive end.

Jon Conover: He had a solid year in 2008, and hopefully in 2009 as well.

Mike Therman: He is the second Ann Arbor Pioneer grad on the team who is in the mix for playing time as a backup and on special teams. Heinager is the other.

Jordan Reilly: Another solid walk-on player who contributes regularly on special teams.
