Observations on the first half with Northwestern, 17-6
Both teams had two red zones each, but Michigan gained 14 points while Northwestern could only muster 6 points. The Wildcasts could only score 3 points off one Wolverine turnover, and the Wolverines scored 7 points off one Wildcat miscue.
Offense rolled to 145 net yards with 11 first downs; they were 5 of 8 in 3rd down conversions. Davis Warren hit 19 of 24 for 131 yards and a TD, but also an interception; Warren was sacked once for a 9 yard loss. We only netted 14 yards rushing. Donovan Edwards gained 17 yards on 6 carries, and caught 4 passes for another 17 yards. Tyler Morris caught 5 passes for 25 yards. Colston Loveland caught 3 passes for 22 yards and a TD. Kalel Mulling ran 3 times for 6 yards and a TD. Michigan had a 4:30 time of possession advantage that resulted in 13 more offensive plays. Xander Mueller led Northwestern with 8 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception. Theran Johnson, Josh Fussell, and Mac Uihlein had 5 tackles each.
Defense held Northwestern to 84 net yards with 16 on the ground, and 4 first downs; the Wildcats were only one of six in 3rd down conversions. Jack Lausch hit 6 of 10 for 68 yards with an interception by Aamir Hall. Bryce Kirtz had 2 catches for 47 yards. Cam Porter ran 6 times for 23 yards. The Wolverines had 3 sacks. Ernest hausmann and Kenneth Grant led the defense with 3 tackles each including one sack each.
Dominic Zvada hit a 56 field goal, and Tommy Doman hit a 48 yard punt. A.J. Henning ran back a 27 yard punt return setting up the Wildcats for their second score. Northwestern hit both red zone field goals by Luke Akers.
Second Half will continue to be a low scoring defensive affair, but we should win so long as we don't commit any more turnovers. Go Blue!
