Observations on the win over Michigan State, 44-10

Michigan converted 6 red zones for 30 points; Michigan State converted two red zones for 10 points. The Wolverines gained 10 points off two Spartan turnovers; the Sparties were unsuccessful in scoring off the one Wolverine miscue.


Offense gained 25 first downs, 467 yards in 67 offensive plays with 83 on the ground; they were 8 of 14 in 3rd and 4th down conversions. Shea Patterson was 24 of 33 for 384 yards and 4 TDs despite being sacked 4 times; he gained -15 yards in 8 carries. Ronnie Bell grabbed 9 of those for 150 yards; his performance tied him for 3rd on the all-time Wolverine record book list for most receiving yards in a game. Donovan Peoples-Jones had 4 receptions for 48 yards and a TD. Nico Collins had 3 catches for 45 yards and a TD. Nick Eubanks caught a 5 yard TD pass. Cornelius Johnson had a 39 yard reception for our final touchdown in the 4th quarter. Sean McKeon caught 2 passes for 46 yards. Mike Sainristil had 2 catches for 21 yards. Hassan Haskins carried 6 times for 13 yards and a TD; Zach Charbonnet got 7 carries for 30 yards. Tru Wilson carried 10 times for 26 yards, and caught a 3 yard pass. Giles Jackson had 2 carries for 32 yards. Offense scored on 8 possessions, and was forced into only one punt by the Spartan defense; most of all, there were no Wolverine turnovers despite one fumble by Patterson. Xavier Henderson and Tyriq Thompson led the Spartans with 9 tackles each; Antjuan Simmons had 7 stops, and both Panasiuk brothers were ejected from the game with unsportsmanlike conduct. Michigan had 9 penalties for 91 yards; Michigan State had 7 penalties for 93 yards in a game that was not easy to officiate due to the "hard" feelings in the rivalry.


The Spartans had 16 first downs with 5 by penalty, 220 net yards in 60 offensive plays with 54 on the ground; they were 4 of 15 in 3rd and 4th down conversions. Brian Lewerke was 17 of 30 for 166 yards and a TD, but also two interceptions while being sacked 3 times; he also ran 13 times for net of 12 yards. Emilio Collins gained 27 yards in 12 carries. Cody White had 6 receptions for 78 yards. Defense was led by Jordan Glasgow with 8 tackles including 0.5 sack. Ambry Thomas, Josh Metellus, and Mike Danna had 6 tackles each. Ambry Thomas and LaVert Hill had interceptions. There was no time of possession advantage, but Michigan had 7 more offensive plays. Defense forced the Spartans into 7 punts, 2 turnovers plus a blocked punt.


Khaleke Hudson blocked a punt. Giles Jackson had 2 kickoff returns for 30 yards. Jake Moody had 9 kickoffs with 6 touchbacks. Will Hart punted once for 47 yards. Quinn Nordin hit 3 field goals in 3 attempts. Donovan Peoples-Jones had 2 punt returns for 58 yards, but fumbled after a 50 yard scamper for a turnover. Michigan State downed two punts inside the 20.
