Observations on the win over Notre Dame, 38-0!

-Michigan capitalizes on many mistakes by Irish forcing three turnovers, executing on four of four red zones for 28 points, and 21 points off those three Irish turnovers!

-Mallett was 7 of 15 for 90 yards, but 3 of those catches were TDs: one each by Mathews, Manningham and Arrington. Offense had 25 first downs, 378 yards in total offense in 77 plays and 11 of 18 in 3rd and 4th down conversions and dominated time of possession by 8 minutes resulting in a 22 play advantage.

-Hart scores two TDs and gains 187 yards in 35 carries and 2 catches for 14 yards. Minor gains 81 yards on 17 carries. Carlos Brown carries 4 times for 10 yards, and one fumble resulting in our only turnover with 2 minutes to go in the game. Brown also managed to fumble a kickoff, but they ruled his knee had touched. Walk-on Jim Potemba gains 9 yards on 2 carries; it looks like Horn goes to redshirt. We win the net rushing battle: 288 to -4 yards.

-On defense, Chris Graham has his best game with 7 tackles; John "Machete" Thompson intercepts a pass, and leads the defense with 6 tackles. Crable has a great game with 5 tackles, 4 for loss including 2 sacks and a tipped pass. Brandon Graham finally comes up with a game, and gets 3.5 sacks while forcing a fumble. Brandon Harrison recovers a forced fumble by forced by Chris Graham and contributes 5 tackles. Donovan Warren forces and recovers the other fumble and comes up with 5 tackles. Brandent Engelmon has 5 tackles including a sack. Artis Chambers has moved to backup at strong safety, and comes up with 5 tackles; senior strong safety Jamar Adams only contributes 2 tackles. Stevie Brown comes up with his first interception, and a great runback along with 2 tackles. Morgan Trent contributes 3 tackles, and covers pretty well overall. Defense forces 4 turnovers and 7 punts with 8 sacks (6 in the first half). Defense limits Notre Dame to 10 first downs, and 5 of 14 in 3rd and 4th down conversions. Notre Dame runs one play the entire first half and two plays in 3 quarters in our territory. Notre Dame now has 39 possessions this year without a touchdown including 13 in this game.

-Special Teams converts all extra points and a field goal, but give up a fake punt for an Irish first down. Mesko punts 4 times, and gets one inside the 20; Zbikowski was no threat on runbacks (3 for 26 yards). Notre Dame commits costly pass interference penalties setting us up. Overall, we had 4 penalties (Crable-late hit, Delay, 2 more) for 37 yards, and the Irish have 7 for 51 yards. We continue to have issues with players not being lined up for punts or extra points. Mathews is dependable on punts, but no threat with 5 returns for 27 yards.

-Player participation notes include Johnny Sears apparently quitting the football team; he was on the two-deep, dress list, but wasn't participating in warm-ups and didn't play. Dutch came in late for Warren. Marques Slocum didn't make the dress list for the third consecutive game. Renaldo Sagesse is backing up Ferrara at defensive tackle and Gallimore is backing up the nose. Frosh backup flanker, Junior Hemmingway, also didn't make the "no-dress" list, and no reason given like injury or discipline. Babb spelled Hemingway. Toney Clemons get his first start as Mathews is punished for the kicking incident. Kraus moves to center as Boren is too low to the ground for 6'7" Mallett to lean down to get snap so Boren moves to Left Guard. If I were coaching, I'd have put in my back up quarterback with 10 minute to go in the 4th quarter, but Carr puts in Sheridan first, then Cone with only a few minutes to go in the game. Does he really prepare players for game situations? Rogers came in at cornerback so no redshirt for him. Still no sign of Mouton at WILL although he did play on special teams, Logan backed up Chris Graham. Lopata got his first action on kickoffs, and got 4 chances while Wright kicked off 3 times. Frosh who have played so far include(11): Babb, Chambers, Clemons, Helmuth, Hemingway, Mallett, Rogers, Sagesse, Warren, Webb and Wolfolk. 3 Frosh started this week: Warren, Mallett and Clemons. Frosh who appear to be redshirting (unless further injuries occur) are(8): Evans, Herron, Horn, Huyge, Molk, Van Bergen, Watson and Williams.

-Thank God the Irish came to town! Nothing like a massacre to help build back our confidence and self-esteem! God Bless the Irish! Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
