Observations on the win over Oklahoma, 17-10
Michigan converted two red zones for 10 points, and held Oklahoma 3 points in one red zone. The Wolverines scored 7 points off two Sooner turnovers.
Offense gained 263 net yards with 152 on the ground, and 14 first downs; they were 5 of 14 on 3rd and 4th down conversions. Bryce Underwood hit 9 of 17 for 111 yards, and ran 18 times for 87 yards including a 38 yard TD. Underwood fumbled, but recovered it; he also contributed to the fumble by Hiter on a handoff, but Hiter recovered it as well. Jordan Marshall ran 11 times for 32 yards and a TD. Savion Hiter ran 8 times for 6 yards, but had 3 receptions for 41 yards. J.J. Buchanan caught 2 passes for 48 yards. Andrew Marsh ran a jet sweep for 15 yards, and caught 2 passes for 7 yards. Jalen Hoffman caught a 9 yard pass. Bryson Kuzdzal ran 3 times for 12 yards. Michigan dominated time of possession by nearly 7 minutes, but Oklahoma ran 4 more offensive plays due to a poor second half offensive performance with only 3 first downs and two "3 and outs." Owen Heinecke led the Sooner defense with 10 tackles inlcuding a sack.
Defense held Oklahoma to 289 net yards with 100 on the ground; they were 3 of 14 in 3rd and 4th down conversions with 17 first downs. John Mateer hit 17 of 33 for 189 yards with a TD and a costly interception; and ran 13 times for 45 yards. Mackenzie Alleyne caught a 22 yarder for a TD. Rocky Beers caught 6 passes for 94 yards. Trell Harris caught 4 passes for 43 yards. Lloyd Avant ran 9 times for 35 yards, and caught 3 passes for 13 yards. Our defensive backfield blanketed Isaiah Satenga, the Sooner's top receiver, and held him to two receptions for 9 yards; he ran 3 times for 11 yards. Troy Bowles led the defense for the second week in a row with 9 tackles. John Henry Daley had 8 tackles, 3 for loss including a sack. Nate Staehling had 7 tackles. Chris Bracy forced a fumble that Bowles recovered; Bracy contributed 6 tackles, but was beat on the lone Sooner TD. Jyaire Hill was the defensive hero with a red zone interception that broke a 10-10 tie; this was after he took a really stupid penalty for unnecessary roughness giving Oklahoma life after the defense had forced a punt inside the 10 yard line.
Special Teams hit a 40 yard field goal by Trey Butkowski. Cam Brown punted seven times with six downed inside the 20. Four kickoffs with three touchbacks by Jacob Baggett. The only special teams problem was a penalty for running into the kicker on a punt by Kendrick Bell.
It was good to see the team respond so well after a pathetic performance against Western Michigan! It was also good to see Bryce Underwood lead the team so well, and have zero turnovers. Go Blue!
