Observations on the first half with Penn State, 16-14
Michigan completely dominates the first half statistically with 4 red zones, but only converted 16 points as they were held to 3 field goals; the Wolverines totalled 274 yards in total offense with 168 on the ground with 18 first downs, but a costly turnover that the Nittany Lions turned into a quick TD gave them a brief 14-13 lead after Michigan led, 13-0. J.J. McCarthy hit 13 of 20 for 106 yards with an interception, and ran 3 times for 26 yards; the Wolverines were 7 of 11 in 3rd down conversions. Blake Corum ran 21 times for 93 yards and a TD; he also caught 3 passes for 15 yards. Donovan Edwards ran 6 times for 49 yards. Ronnie Bell caught 4 passes for 25 yards. Cornelius Johnson caught 3 passes for 43 yards. Roman Wilson caught 3 passes for 23 yards. The Wolverines held nearly an 18 minute time of possession advantage that resulted in 36 more offensive plays. Jyaire Brown had 9 tackles to lead the Nittany Lions.
Defense was outstanding except for one bad play when Sean Clifford ran a 3rd and 2 for 60 yards to our 3 yard line. Penn State had one first down, 83 total yards with 66 on the ground; they were 2 of 5 in 3rd and 4th down conversions. Clifford hit 2 of 5 for 17 yards. Kaytron Allen scored a one yard TD to cap the drive. The defense held the Penn State offense with two early "3 and outs." Junior Colson led the defense with 3 tackles.
Special Teams were solid with 3 field goals by Jake Moody. A.J. Henning had one kickoff return for 17 yards. Michigan had no punts. Penn State punted twice, but Henning had no return yards.
Second Half should be a thriller as both teams know what they need to do. Go Blue!
