Observations on the first half with Minnesota, 21-3
Michigan converted two red zones created by the defense and special teams for 14 points; Minnesota got a red zone on a "Hail Mary" with 2 seconds left to Nick Kallerup for 44 yards, and kicked a field goal for 3 points. The Wolverines scored 7 points off 2 Gopher turnovers.
Offense gained 107 net yards with 71 on the ground; they were 3 of 7 in 3rd down conversions, but it didn't lead the team to any red zones. Kalel Mullings ran 8 times for 45 yards and 2 TDs. Alex Orji ran 6 times for 13 yards, and was 4 of 8 in the air for 36 yards and a TD. Colston Loveland caught 2 passes for 16 yards. Tyler Morris got an 11 yard TD pass. Marlin Klein caught a 9 yarder. Donovan Edwards ran 4 times for 13 yards. The Wolverine offense had three "3 and outs." Maverick Baranowski and Cody Lindenberg led the Gopher defense with 6 tackles each.
Defense held the Gopher offense to 130 net yards with 16 on the ground; Minnesota was 4 of 9 in 3rd down conversions. Max Brosmer completed 11 of 17 for 114 yards, and was picked off by Jyaire Hill; he was also a victim of 4 sacks including 2 by Mason Graham. Daniel Jackson grabbed 4 passes for 32 yards. Makari Paige and Graham led the defense with 4 tackles each. Zeke Berry stole the ball from Jackson to give Michigan another red zone which was converted by the offense for a TD. The Gophers held a 3 minute time of possession advantage that resulted in 8 more offensive plays despite their two turnovers.
Special Teams were awesome! A blocked punt by Kechaun Bennett was recovered by Christian Boivin for a red zone at the 11. Tommy Doman punted 4 times for a 47 yard average, and one downed inside the 20. The Gophers had a 22 yard punt return by Koi Perich. The Wolverines dominated field position all half long.
Second Half should be no problem so long as we don't turn the ball over! Go Blue!
