Observations on the first half with Iowa, 14-3
Iowa gained two red zones for 3 points; Michigan had no red zones. The Hawkeyes couldn't score off two Wolverine turnovers.
Offense was weak! No running game as Hassan Haskins only gained 13 yards in 5 carries; however, Blake Corum ran once for a 67 yard TD. Cade McNamara could only complete 11 of 18 for a measly 62 yards, and threw and interception plus was sacked once. A.J. Henning ran once for a 29 yard gain. Roman Wilson caught 2 passes for 82 yards including a 75 yard TD from Donovan Edwards. Haskins caught 5 passes for 22 yards. Offense ended up with only 8 first downs, 253 yards with 116 on the ground; Michigan was 2 of 8 in 3rd and 4th down conversions. Riley Moss led the Hawkeyes with 4 tackles. John Waggoner had 3 quarterback hits.
Defense held in there! Iowa gained 161 total yards with only 35 on the ground, and 8 first downs. Spencer Petras was 8 of 17 for 126 yards. Sam Laporta caught 3 passes for 46 yards. Charlie Jones had 2 catches for 41 yards. Tyler Goodson had 12 carries for 24 yards plus one 4 yard reception. Iowa held a 4:30 time of possession advantage that gave them a 6 play advantage; the Hawkeyes were only one of nine in 3rd down conversions. Josh Ross led Wolverine tacklers with 5 stops; Kris Jenkins and Aidan Hutchinson had 4 tackles each.
Special Teams was all Iowa! Tory Taylor nailed 5 punts for a 45.6 yard average with 3 downed inside the 20 pinning us much of the second quarter; Iowa dominated field position the entire first half. Caleb Shudak hit one of two field goals. Brad Robbins punted 4 times for a 47.8 yard average.
Second Half will be another nailbiter unless we can run the football, and even out the time of possession. Michigan may have capitalized on two big plays in the first half, but Iowa is dominating play with their special teams and defense. We need to stop Iowa on their first possession, and then score on a drive. Go Blue!
