1968 Michigan Football Team finishes 8-2 and ranked #12, but loses to NCAA Football Champion Ohio State 14-50; after the game, Buckeye Head Coach Woody Hayes was asked why with only 1:23 left in the game, he went for 2 on the extra point when the score was 50-14!!! He responded, "because I couldn't go for three!" Michigan Head Football Coach Bump Elliott resigns with a 51-42-2 record; AD Don Canham, who prevailed over Elliott and Forest Evashevski for the AD position, offers him the Associate Athletic Director position; he accepted on December 24 and continued in the position until June 11, 1970. He then becomes AD at Iowa until 1991. Bo Schembechler accepted the Michigan Head Football Coaching position on December 27 after Canham offered it to Joe Paterno.

Michigan finished 9th at NCAA Wrestling Championships with 2 All-Americans, and 2nd at the Big Ten Championships, are 10-2 in dual meets including their 6th victory in a row over Iowa (1963-68), set a record 28 Falls in a dual meet season and most consecutive road wins, 28 (1962-68). Former Michigan Basketball Star, Bill Buntin, dies of a heart attack at age 26 on May 9; he still holds the record for most double-doubles in school history with 58 in 79 games
